Happy Birthday!

Marco Polo (1254–1324) was a famed Venetian explorer and writer.

His father and uncle were successful traders in the East, and when he was 17 years old, they took Marco along with them for an incredible 24-year adventure. Their travels led them to follow the Silk Road across Asia. They met with royalty, performed diplomatic missions, and made a fortune.

Marco Polo’s detailed travelogues, published as The Travels of Marco Polo, introduced Europeans to the largely unknown cultures and wonders of the East, including China, India, and Iran.

three-dimensional objects in our homes. Scientists have taken the process of 3D printing to new heights

by creating objects not out of metal or plastic filaments, but out of living human tissue. An American regenerative medicine company recently used the technology to create a new ear for a patient born with a small and misshapen ear, opening a new field of reconstructive surgery.

Who Said So?

Cyclones and hurricanes typically gather energy from warm ocean water, a process that increases the storm’s strength, speed, and intensity. With landfall, storms quickly weaken thanks to the loss of their energy source. Yet, some storms strangely intensify when they hit land. This fact stumped scientists until they realized that the land was working just like the ocean. In some places, the soil is both warm and full of moisture, acting just like an ocean. Scientists have called dubbed these moisture- laden soils “brown oceans.”
