1498 – The master artist Michelangelo was commissioned to carve the Pietà, which depicts Mary holding the body of Jesus. This work has interested historians for centuries because the sculpture does not feature the perfect human proportions that are the hallmark of Michelangelo’s work.
1883 – Mount Krakatoa, an island volcano in the Dutch Indies (now Indonesia), erupted with violent explosions that destroyed two-thirds of the island and killed about 36,000 people.
1946 – Animal Farm by George Orwell was published in the U.S. The allegory was based on the totalitarianism and injustice taking place in the Soviet Union at the time. It is included in the list of Great Books of the Western World.
