Centennial Memories

On this day 100 years ago, Wild West sharpshooter Annie Oakley, at age 62, hit 98 out of 100 targets from 16 yards, breaking all existing records for women’s trap shooting.

Oakley had made a name for herself performing in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show from 1885 to 1902. After a stint in stage acting, Oakley joined the staff of the Pinehurst (North Carolina) Gun Club in 1916, where she gave shooting lessons and exhibitions. It was during one of these exhibitions that she shattered the record, proving once and for all that she was still one of the deadest shots the West had ever known.
