1907 – The New York Times reported that women taxi drivers were such a big hit in Paris that some male drivers were dressing as women in order to compete.
1944 – The Family Allowance Act was passed, providing universal welfare grants to all Canadians with children under the age of 16. The monthly grants ranged from $5 to
$8 per child, depending on age.

gave rise to candid, which candidates rarely are.

Betty Callaway (1928–2011) was an acclaimed English figure skating coach who grew up in Reading, Berkshire. After getting rejected by the Royal Ballet School, Callaway decided to pursue ice skating. At 16, she got a spot as a performer in the Blackpool Pleasure Beach ice show. There she fell in love with fellow ice skater Roy
Callaway, whom she later married. In 1950, the couple started coaching ice skaters,
including Princess Anne and Prince Charles. She went on to coach many champions, such as Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the 1984 Olympic ice dancing gold medalists.

When Was It?
It was during this year that the U.S.
moved to the gold standard as a way to back its currency. Casey Jones died in a train wreck, giving rise to the “Ballad of Casey Jones.” Dr.
Karl Landsteiner developed a system for classifying blood types as A, B, or O. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was first published.
The Otis elevator company trademarked the first escalator. And the Boxer Rebellion began in China.

Wild Kingdom
Slovenia is hiding a fantastic secret in its Postojna caves. Sure, the caves contain rare cave drawings dated to 1213, wondrous historical artifacts in themselves.
But what draws 35 million visitors a year is found much deeper. 377 feet below the surface, the caves are inhabited by baby dragons! Or at least that’s what the locals call them. During floods, tiny, blind salamanders known as olms washed into the streets of nearby villages.
Long, slender, and dragon-like, locals assumed that they were the offspring of cave-dwelling dragons.
