1854 — The Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead, England, took hold, overtaking a warehouse stocked with highly flammable materials, resulting in a colossal explosion that reigned fire, debris, and burning sulfur down on inhabitants and neighboring buildings. In a Greek wedding tradition, the bride writes the names of her single female friends on the sole of her shoe. After the traditional wedding dance, the shoe is examined, and those whose

names have worn off are said to be next in line for the altar.

Happy Birthday!

Jenny Lind (1820–1887) was a Swedish opera singer who was born Johanna Maria Lind. Her angelic voice earned her the moniker

“the Swedish Nightingale.” Lind headlined operas across Europe in the 1840s. She then undertook a popular American concert tour (spurring what newspapers at the time called “Lind Mania”) in collaboration with P. T.

Barnum over the following decade.

She donated much of the fortune she amassed to fund public education in Sweden. Eventually,

she settled in London, where she raised three children with her husband, Otto Goldschmidt.

Picture of the Day

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this pruning strategy

might end badly.

Now it’s your turn to come up with a good caption.

Who Said So?

This longest-serving first lady of the United States said, “A woman is like a teabag—you can’t tell how

strong she is until you put her in hot water.”

Root of the Matter

Filthy rich

Plenty of people have wished to be filthy rich, or extremely wealthy, but this phrase originally meant to become rich by dishonorable or dishonest means. In the 14th century, the word lucre meant money and was often given a negative connotation in phrases such as “foul lucre” or “filthy lucre.” Money itself became known simply as “the filthy.” Over time, the expression lost its negative connotation, and a slang term for extremely rich people eventually evolved into the phrase filthy rich.

Today is

Random Acts of Poetry Day. You don’t need to be a famous poet to express yourself on this day. Write a small poem of your own composition in chalk on the sidewalk or share a favorite bit of verse with someone you love.
