What Am I?
4,000 years ago, amongst primitive humans, I was at my simplest—
nothing more than a bamboo stick or hazel shoot with a horsehair line.
Today, I am at my most advanced, made from carbon fiber, magnesium alloy, graphite, boron, or fiberglass.
No matter my construction, my use has always been the same throughout the millennia. In the heat or cold, on the water or along the coastline, I am an essential tool for survival. And the tales of my use have always been prone to exaggeration. What am I?
Centennial Memories
On this day 100 years ago, the Chicago Fire Department announced that neither Mrs. Catherine O’Leary nor her cow started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
That same year, a reporter for the Chicago Republican
newspaper also admitted to fabricating the story of Mrs. O’Leary’s arsonist
cow. Despite these exonerations, the legend of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow persisted. In 1997, another investigation confirmed O’Leary’s innocence, going so far as to suggest that a man named
“Peg Leg” Sullivan started the blaze with a careless toss of a match. The evidence prompted the Chicago City Council to exonerate Mrs. O’Leary and her cow a second time.
