You Are What You Eat

A  plate  of  loco  moco  looks  as  mountainous as the islands of Hawaii  where  it  is  eaten.  The  dish  is  the  ultimate  comfort  food  found  on  every  local  menu. Gravy is poured on  top  of  a  fried  egg,  which  tops a burger atop a heap  of  sticky  rice.  The  food  is  also  a  testament to Hawaii’s Polynesian and  American  heritages.  Variations  are  popular: some add Spam; others add  caramelized  onions  or  salsa.  Just  don’t add scrambled eggs. The moco  loses  its loco when  you  can’t  break  the drippy, yellow egg yolk.

What’s in a Name?

This actress, born Ilyena Lydia  Vasilievna Mironov, has a name  that sounds like a spy. She’s also

played plenty of them in  the movies.

Golden Memories

On this day 50 years ago, astronauts  David Scott and James Irwin became  the first people to drive on the moon.

The astronauts had gone to the moon  as  part  of  the  Apollo  15  mission.

Using  the  Lunar  Rover  Vehicle,   often called the “moon buggy,” they  covered  a  little  over  17  miles  of  driving on the moon’s surface, hitting  max  speeds  of  eight  mile  per  hour  and  never  getting  farther  than  three  miles from the Apollo Lunar Module  in case the buggy’s batteries gave out  and  they  were  forced  to  walk  back.

The  Apollo  astronauts  returned  to  Earth, but  the moon buggy  was left  behind for future visitors.

Today is

Black Tot Day. On this day in 1970, the Royal Navy ceased issuing  sailors a daily rum ration, or “tot.” The tradition began in 1655 and was believed  to keep morale high while offering an alternative to water, which spoilt easily.
