Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

As we begin our Lenten journey, may we take time each day to grow closer to God in our Lenten practices. I hope it is helpful to use the questions below as a starting point (but by no means a finishing point!) for your Lenten reflection and spiritual growth! God bless you all.

In Christ, Fr. Tom

Prayer: Am I able to dedicate more time each day or each week in personal prayer? Do I have the strength and wisdom to pray for those with whom my relationship is strained, or do I only pray for those I love? Do I make the time to frequent the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and Eucharist, or in Eucharistic Adoration?

Fasting: How conscious am I of what I put into my body? Do I eat out of habit or because I am hungry? Do I binge on watching television or playing video games, putting them before relationships with those around me? Am I willing and able to depend more on the Lord than I depend on food or entertainment to give me comfort and sustain me? Can I “fast” from social media and/or my smartphone for at least one hour, possibly dinner hour, every evening?

Almsgiving: How have I been present to or assisted those in need, through time, talent or treasure? Do I give willing-ly and joyfulwilling-ly, or am I tied to a sense of guilt or obligation alone? Once a week or once a month, could I make time to assist in the SJV Pantry, or another direct ministry to the poor?

Al comenzar nuestro viaje de Cuaresma, podemos tomar tiempo cada día para acercarnos más a Dios en nuestras prácticas de Cua-resma. Espero que sea útil usar las siguientes preguntas como punto de partida (¡pero de ninguna manera es un punto final!) Para su reflexión de Cuaresma y su crecimiento espiritual! Dios los bendiga a todos.

Oración: ¿Puedo dedicar más tiempo cada día o cada semana a la oración personal? ¿Tengo la fuerza y la sabiduría para orar por aquellos con quienes mi relación está tensa, o solo oro por los que amo? ¿Me tomo el tiempo para frecuentar los Sacramentos, especialmente la

Reconciliación y la Eucaristía, o en la Adoración Eucarística?

Ayuno: ¿Qué tan consciente estoy de lo que pongo en mi cuerpo? ¿Cómo por hábito o porque tengo hambre? ¿Me gusta ver televisión o jugar videojuegos, antes de tener relaciones con quienes me rodean? ¿Estoy dispuesto y puedo depender más del Señor que de la comida o el entretenimiento para brindarme consuelo y sustento? ¿Puedo "ayunar" alejándome de las redes sociales y / o de mi teléfono durante al menos una hora, posiblemente a la hora de la cena, todas las noches?

Almsgiving: ¿Cómo he estado presente o ayudado a los necesitados, a través del tiempo, el talento o el tesoro? ¿Doy voluntariamente y con alegría, o estoy atado a un sentimien-to de culpa u obligación solo? Una vez a la semana o una vez al mes, ¿podría dedicarme tiempo para ayudar en la Despensa del SJV u otro ministerio directo para los pobres?

LENTEN GUIDELINES

Ash Wednesday, March 6, and Good Friday, April 19,

are both days of

FASTING & ABSTINANCE.

A day of Fasting means:

a limit of one full meal and two

smaller meals, not exceeding the main meal, for those ages 18-59

inclusive.

A day of Abstinence means:

all who have reached their 14th

year are bound to abstain totally from meat (including chicken)

on that day.

All Lenten Fridays are days of abstinence only
