2ND ANNUAL WOMEN’S RETREAT

All women are invited to the 2nd annual women’s retreat on Saturday, November 5th from 8:30 a.m.—1 p.m. in Fr. Connors Hall. This is a half-day retreat of prayer, re-flection, music and insights. Fr. CAN WE CHANGE PEOPLES’ MINDS?

Some people (including may Catholics) feel like it is futile to continue to have a debate over the issue of abortion because people feel too strongly about it and have already made up their minds as to what they think.

This is wrong.

People throughout history have changed their minds on vital social issues. When the United States was new, there was no suffrage or equal rights for women and racial minorities. Al-most universally in the United States today, the general popu-lace recognizes that this was wrong and the women and non-whites are entitled to their basic rights as human beings, and the law recognizes it too.

It took many years and decades of intense struggle involving emotions just as fierce if not more fierce than those surrounding the Pro-Life Movement in the 21st century.

But victories for freedom were won and people certainly did change their minds. That is how change happens. Education is vital so that more people understand the struggle to protect in-nocent life in the womb and then stand ready to defend the

rights of all living people, including the unborn.

Casi universalmente en los Estados Unidos hoy, la población en general reconoce que esto estaba mal y las mujeres y los No-blancos no tienen derecho a sus derechos bási-cos como seres humanosy la ley lo reconoce también.

Tomó muchos años y décadas de intensa lucha con las eciones fuertes, como feroces o si no más feroces de los del mo-vimiento pro-vida en el siglo XXI.

Pero ganaron victorias de libertad y gente sin duda cambio de opinión. Asi es cómo el cambio ocurre. La educación es vital para que más gente entienda la lucha para proteger la vida ino-cente en el vientre y entonces están dispuestos a defender los derechos de todas las personas, incluyendo la vida del feto.

AN AUTUMN MESSAGE ABOUT CHILD PROTECTION

Autumn means back to school for children and back to work for those who have been on vacation. Amidst the hustle and bustle of this season, let us all keep sight of the importance of keeping our children and young people safe from danger. Training requirements to safeguard children have been established in parishes throughout the Diocese of Stockton. These training requirements help ensure that all children and youth experience a safe environment in all parish activities and events. The

Diocese of Stockton mandates that all people who work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo child abuse prevention training through the guidelines established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This training includes being fingerprinted

and background checked and completing an on-line training course entitled Shield the Vulnerable. If you are planning on helping or assisting in your child’s school, you are required to complete this training.
