“The Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,

‘This Man welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ So to them he addressed this parable…” (Lk 15, 2-3) Jesus tells the complainers three stories. What’s new here?

These are perhaps the most moving of the parables because they teach us that God is interested in the lost and is joyful when it found. He even faces criticism for being too understanding. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, the father listens to the protest of his older son with love, peace and without making excuses. Jesus faces fierce criticism for his friendship with sinners, and each time the Church suggests that God searches for the lost, there can be discomfort among some. But God is still interested in even one lost soul. The parables of the lost sheep and the lost drachma (coin) are astound- ing in that they demonstrate this interest in just one lost thing, something we might write off as insignificant or too difficult to chase after. Obviously, this doesn’t mean we should be careless with the many, but it does show us the limitless love of God. For that reason Chris- tian ethics are very demanding. We don’t always under- stand these demands when we cannot fully grasp the worth of each individual human person, no matter who he or she is.

Other celebrations this week:

Tuesday, September 13 – St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. This bishop of Constantinople was known as “chrysostomos” or “golden mouthed be- cause of his preaching and is considered one of the four great doctors of the eastern Church and patron of preachers.

Wednesday, 14 – Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. On this day in 320 St. Helen found the true cross in Jerusalem and brought back pieces to Rome along with earth from the hill of Calvary. Her son Constantine had a church erected over the spot in Jerusalem.

Thursday, 15 – Our Lady of Sorrows. Today’s memorial recalls Mary’s seven sorrows as she followed her son as a faithful disciple.

Friday, 16 – Sts. Cornelius, pope and Cyprian, bishop.

These martyrs gave their lives under Valerian and were executed in Rome in 258. Their names are mentioned in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I).

Lo perdido

“Los fariseos y los escribas murmuraban entre sí: ‘Este recibe a los pecadores y come con ellos’. Jesús les dijo entonces esta parábola…” (Lc. 15, 2-3) Aquí Jesús cuen- ta tres parábolas a los murmuradores. ¿Qué hay de nue- vo aquí? Son tal vez las parábolas más emocionantes pues nos enseñan que Dios se interesa por lo perdido y se alegra cuando se encuentra. Tiene que afrontar la crítica por su gran comprensión. En la parábola del Hijo Pródigo, el padre escucha a las protestas de su hijo ma- yor con amor, con paz y sin excusarse. Jesús también tiene que afrontar las críticas a la hora de ir con los peca- dores, y cada vez que la Iglesia sugiere que a Dios le gusta buscar lo perdido, puede causar el malestar entre algunos. Pero Dios sigue interesado en el alma perdida.

Las parábolas de la oveja perdida y la dracma (moneda) perdida son maravillosas en demonstrar su interés en cada cosa que se puede perder – algo que a nosotros tal vez no tiene valor o que no vale la pena buscar. Es obvio que no debemos descuidar lo mucho, pero sí nos mues- tra el amor de Dios que no tiene límites. Por eso la ética cristiana es exigente. No entendemos siempre estas exi- gencias pues no estimamos siempre el valor de cada in- dividuo, sea quien sea.

Otras celebraciones esta semana:

Martes 13 de septiembre – San Juan Crisóstomo, obispo y doctor de la Iglesia. Este obispo de Constantinopla se conocía como “chrysostomos”, o sea, boca de oro, por su predicación excelente. Es reconocido como uno de los 4 grandes doctores de la Iglesia occidental y es patrón de los predicadores.

Miércoles 14 – Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz.

En este día en 320, Santa Helena encontró la verdadera cruz en Jerusalén y llevo trozos de ella a Roma junto con tierra del monte Calvario. Su hijo, Constantino hizo cons- truir una iglesia en el lugar.

Jueves 15 – Nuestra Señora de Dolores. El memorial de hoy conmemora los 7 dolores de la Santísima Virgen a lo largo de su vida como discípula de Jesucristo.

Viernes 16 – Santos Cornelio, papa, y Cipriano, obispo.

Estos mártires dieron la vida bajo Valeriano en 258. Sus nombres están mencionados en el canon romano (Plegaria eucarística I).

OLGC is seeking a part-time business manager (approxi- mately 24 hrs/wk). Job duties include full charge bookkeeping responsibilities along with office manage- ment. This position is responsible for the annual budget and preparation of diocesan financial reports. The busi- ness manager works closely with the pastor and con- tracted maintenance to oversee building projects and serves as a liaison to the Parish Finance Council. Duties also include parishioner data base management, facility scheduling, and ensuring the parish’s adherence to the Diocesan Safe Environment protocols.

This position requires a minimum of 3 years bookkeeping experience. Candidate must also be proficient in Quick- Books, Excel and Word. Position requires strong organi- zational skills and work ethic. Una mujer tiene derecho a hacer con su cuerpo lo que desee. Mantén tus leyes fuera de mi cuerpo.

Argumento:

Una mujer tiene derecho a hacer lo que quiera con su cuerpo, pero no creo que tenga el derecho de hacer lo quiera con el cuerpo de otra persona. Un embarazo siem- pre involucra dos cuerpos.

Podría discutir usando los Mandamientos de Dios.

Si podemos hacer lo que queramos con nuestro cuerpo, esto supone que no aceptamos a Dios ni a sus manda- mientos.

Existe un consenso científico de que un embrión no es parte del cuerpo de una mujer. Es un ser humano vivo genéticamente distinto, a otro cuerpo. No somos libres de infligir daño al cuerpo de otra persona.

A woman has the right to control her own body. Keep your laws off my body.

Rebuttal:

A woman has a right to do whatever she wants with her body. I don’t believe she has the right to do whatever she wants to someone else’s body. A pregnancy always in- volves two bodies.

Could be debate with God Commandments.

If we can do whatever we want to our bodies, this pre- sumes we don’t accept God and his Commandments.

There is scientific consensus that an embryo is not part of a woman’s body. It is a genetically distinct living human being - another body. We are not free to inflict harm on someone else’s body.

A Prayer for the Mentally Ill

Loving God, we pray today for those who are confront- ed by the sadness, ambiguity and confusion of mental illness, and for those upon whom they depend for atten- tion and compassionate care.

Look with mercy on all whose afflictions bring them weakness, distress, confusion or isolation. Provide for them homes of dignity and peace; give to them under- standing helpers and the willingness to accept help. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
