MORNING OF REFLECTION AND FORMATION

Good Shepherd will be hosting a Morning of Reflection and Formation for all Liturgical Ministers (Choir, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Altar Servers, Ushers, and Sacristans) on August 24th from 8:30 am until 12:00 noon at the main Church. Continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 am. ALL Liturgical ministers are required to attend. The first meeting will be conducted in Spanish.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jer 38:4-6, 8-10; Ps 40; Heb 12:1-4; Lk 12:49-53

In this Sunday's Gospel there is an expression of Jesus that always attracts our attention and needs to be properly understood. While he is on his way to Jerusalem, where death on a cross awaits him, Christ asked his disciples: “Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division”.

So how can his words be explained? To what was the Lord referring when he said he had come - according to St Luke's version - to bring “division” or - according to St Matthew's - the “sword” (Mt 10: 34)? Christ's words mean that the peace he came to bring us is not synonymous with the mere absence of conflicts. On the contrary, Jesus' peace is the result of a constant battle against evil. The fight that Jesus is determined to support is not against human beings or human powers, but against Satan, the enemy of God and man. Anyone who desires to resist this enemy by remaining faithful to God and to good, must necessarily confront misunderstandings and sometimes real persecutions.

All, therefore, who intend to follow Jesus and to commit themselves without compromise to the truth, must know that they will encounter opposition and that in spite of themselves they will become a sign of division between people, even in their own families. In fact, love for one's parents is a holy commandment, but to be lived authentically it can never take precedence over love for God and love for Christ. Thus, following in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus, in accordance with St Francis of Assisi's famous words, Christians become “instruments of peace”; not of a peace that is inconsistent and only apparent but one that is real, pursued with courage and tenacity in the daily commitment to overcome evil with good (cf. Rom 12: 21) and paying in person the price that this entails.

Consolation and strength amid suffering

To speak of faith often involves speaking of painful testing, yet it is precisely in such testing that Paul sees the most convincing proclamation of the Gospel, for it is in weakness and suffering that we discover God’s power which triumphs over our weakness and suffering.

Christians know that suffering cannot be eliminated, yet it can have meaning and become an act of love and entrustment into the hands of God who does not abandon us; in this way it can serve as a moment of growth in faith and love. By contemplating Christ’s union with the Father even at the height of his sufferings on the cross (cf. Mk 15:34), Christians learn to share in the same gaze of Jesus. Even death is illumined and can be experienced as the ultimate call to faith, the ultimate “Go forth from your land” (Gen 12:1), the ultimate “Come!” spoken by the Father, to whom we abandon ourselves in the confidence that he will keep us steadfast even in our final passage.

Suffering reminds us that faith’s service to the common good is always one of hope — a hope which looks ever ahead in the knowledge that only from God, from the future which comes from the risen Jesus, can our society find solid and lasting foundations.

In union with faith and charity, hope propels us towards a sure future, set against a different horizon with regard to the illusory enticements of the idols of this world yet granting new momentum and strength to our daily lives.

En el evangelio de este domingo hay una expresión de Jesús que siempre atrae nuestra atención y hace falta comprenderla bien. Mientras va de camino hacia Jerusalén, donde le espera la muerte en cruz, Cristo dice a sus discípulos: “¿Pensáis que he venido a traer al mundo paz? No, sino división”.

¿Cómo se explican, entonces, esas palabras suyas? ¿A qué se refiere el Señor cuando dice —según la redacción de san Lucas— que ha venido a traer la “división”, o — según la redacción de san Mateo— la “espada”? (Mt 10, 34).

Esta expresión de Cristo significa que la paz que vino a traer no es sinónimo de simple ausencia de conflictos. Al contrario, la paz de Jesús es fruto de una lucha constante contra el mal. El combate que Jesús está decidido a librar no es contra hombres o poderes humanos, sino contra el enemigo de Dios y del hombre, contra Satanás. Quien quiera resistir a este enemigo permaneciendo fiel a Dios y al bien, debe afrontar necesariamente incomprensiones y a veces auténticas persecuciones. Por eso, todos los que quieran seguir a Jesús y comprometerse sin componendas en favor de la verdad, deben saber que encontrarán oposiciones y se convertirán, sin buscarlo, en signo de división entre las personas, incluso en el seno de sus mismas familias. En efecto, el amor a los padres es un mandamiento sagrado, pero para vivirlo de modo auténtico no debe anteponerse jamás al amor a Dios y a Cristo. De este modo, siguiendo los pasos del Señor Jesús, los cristianos se convierten en “instrumentos de su paz’, según la célebre expresión de san Francisco de Asís. No de una paz inconsistente y aparente, sino real, buscada con valentía y tenacidad en el esfuerzo diario por vencer el mal con el bien (cf. Rm 12, 21) y pagando personalmente el precio que esto implica.

Hablar de fe implica a menudo hablar también de pruebas dolorosas, pero precisamente en ellas san Pablo ve el anuncio más convincente del Evangelio, porque en la debilidad y en el sufrimiento se hace manifiesta y palpable el poder de Dios que supera nuestra debilidad y nuestro sufrimiento.

El cristiano sabe que siempre habrá sufrimiento, pero que le puede dar sentido, puede convertirlo en acto de amor, de entrega confiada en las manos de Dios, que no nos abandona y, de este modo, puede constituir una etapa de crecimiento en la fe y en el amor. Viendo la unión de Cristo con el Padre, incluso en el momento de mayor sufrimiento en la cruz (cf. Mc 15,34), el cristiano aprende a participar en la misma mirada de Cristo. Incluso la muerte queda iluminada y puede ser vivida como la última llamada de la fe, el último “Sal de tu tierra “, el último “Ven”, pronunciado por el Padre, en cuyas manos nos ponemos con la confianza de que nos sostendrá incluso en el paso definitivo.

El sufrimiento nos recuerda que el servicio de la fe al bien común es siempre un servicio de esperanza, que mira adelante, sabiendo que sólo en Dios, en el futuro que viene de Jesús resucitado, puede encontrar nuestra sociedad cimientos sólidos y duraderos. En unidad con la fe y la caridad, la esperanza nos proyecta hacia un futuro cierto, que se sitúa en una perspectiva diversa de las propuestas ilusorias de los ídolos del mundo, pero que da un impulso y una fuerza nueva para vivir cada día.

Pensamiento de Mayordomía de la Semana

En la segunda lectura de hoy, San Pablo nos anima a no cansarnos ni desanimarnos, sino a perseverar en seguir a Jesús. Nuestra buena voluntad de dar de nosotros mismos, aún frente a los conflictos y la división, es una manera de medir nuestro discipulado.

For example, will you be driving your kids to school? That morning journey can be a great time for a shared morning prayer and ask God to bless our day.

At bedtime, each child can recall with his parent the best part of his day, and what was the most challenging. How was God there through those events? Not only is this a beautiful way to help your child be conscious of the presence of God, it’s a great way to learn more about your child’s experiences.

Ese camino por la mañana puede ser un gran momento para compartir una oración de la mañana y pedir a Dios que bendiga nuestro día.

A la hora de ir a la cama, cada niño(a) puede recordar con sus padres la mejor parte de su día y lo que fue más desafiante. ¿Cómo estuvo Dios presente a través de esos eventos? Esto no sólo es una hermosa manera de ayudar a su hijo a ser consciente de la presencia de Dios, es una manera de aprender más acerca de las experiencias de su hijo(a).
