First Sunday of Lent ~ Primer Domingo de Cuaresma
ၺSt.
FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT: WE ARE GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE
Jesus, in his humble submission to God’s will, exemplifies for us the right response to divine election. It is not coincidental on this First Sunday of Lent, when the Church celebrates God’s election of catechumens, that we always read from a Gospel account of the temptation of Jesus. Jesus’ forty days in the desert echo Israel’s test- ing for forty years. These Gospel accounts tell of Jesus’ unswerving trust and worship of the gracious and loving God. God chooses, and in doing so, not only human pride is confounded but so too the pride of Satan is overturned. The entire life of Jesus, his ministry, suffering and death, points to God and God alone whose reign is overtaking the world. For in Christ, the faithful are gathered up, given membership in this kingdom and presented to God in a new and everlasting Covenant.
The season of Lent is a time of preparation for the celebration of the Risen Lord on Easter Sunday. The word "Lent"
is derived from an old English word which means "springtime." The Latin adverb lente means "slowly." Members of the Church prepare for the renewal of their baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil. Catechumens, on the other hand, prepare for Baptism and their full initiation into the church. In the early Christian community only three "mortal" sins existed: adultery, murder and apostasy. If a member of the community should be found guilty of one of these sins, he or she would enter a process of repentance lasting up to three years. During this time the person was not al- lowed to worship with the community, but was prayed over and helped to come back to full membership and right relationship with the community. It is, then, appropriate that the Church calls us to repentance with the sign of ashes on our foreheads which we received last Wednesday. From early biblical times, ashes have been sym- bolic of repentance for sin and of grief and mourning. They are a visible sign to remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return. Ashes call us to "repent and believe the good news." The Church invites Christians to fast dur- ing Lent. This type of fasting is not simply abstaining from eating. The fasting recommended has a much more radi- cal scope. It is fasting from sin. It is giving up one's own ways to adopt those of Jesus.
