COURSE DESCRIPTION

SPAN s130 / s140 (Intermediate Spanish I and II) is an intensive course that meets Monday through

Thursday from 9:00am to 12:30pm during the New Haven portion, and Monday through Friday from

9:30am to 1:00pm when in Bilbao (except for days with cultural activities). This course uses a task-based

approach to developing proficiency by integrating grammar and vocabulary in communicative activities,

which include film discussions, role-plays, texts analysis, presentations, etc. There will films and authentic

text readings included in the course. The course is conducted in Spanish. It admits to L5 courses. Students

will further develop their linguistic skills in Spanish and cultural knowledge of Spain by the addition of the

cultural course, SPAN248 01. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to perform

proficiently at an intermediate level in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

COURSE POLICIES AND COMPONENTS

1) Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial to the successful attainment of the course objectives.

Therefore, students are required to attend classes on a daily basis. You are allowed a maximum of one

(1) absence per course (one for 130, and one for 140). Three (3) tardies in excess of 10 minutes will

count as one absence. Any student who accumulates more than one absence per course will have his/her

final course grade lowered by 2% per additional absence. If you accrue significant absences, your

instructor may request Cut Restriction (withdrawal from the course). You may not miss any scheduled

evaluation. If you do not have an official excuse, you will not be able to make up any worked

missed.

2) Communications: Classesv2 will be used for communication, posting of resources, etc. Please note that

in order to access classesv2 (or your Yale mail) when outside of campus or abroad, you need to have a

working multifactor authentication system. Your instructors will discuss this during the first week of the

course.

3) Class Discussions: In the interest of stimulating conversation, some controversial topics may be

discussed. You are encouraged to present, explain, and defend either your own views or views you

think might engage your classmates. You are not expected to agree with the views expressed in class,

nor will your grade depend in any way on the views you choose to express.

4) Homework: Due to the intense nature of this course, homework must be done daily and it might take

1- 3 hours per day. Exercises will come from the online Supersite and from your textbook/ Course

Packet.

a. Supersite. To access the Supersite online platform, go to www.vhlcentral.com and register.

You will be asked for your Code (that came with your textbook). If you bought a book from a

friend and it does not come with a code, go to the VHL website (first page of syllabus) and buy

the Supersite code that includes the webSAM (978-1-60576-970-7 for $145). Your instructors

will show you how to find your homework on the site as well as its useful tools. You have 2

attempts for regular exercises and 1 attempt for others (true/false and quizzes). Homework

must be done by 9:00am of the next day. Late homework will not be accepted.

b. Other exercises. See your syllabus to find out what exercises are due on each day and bring

them to class. If your homework includes watching a film or video, you can find it in

classesv2 under Media Gallery, Site Library tab. Late homework will be penalized.

5) Participation and Preparation: It refers to your willingness to participate actively in class by

asking questions, answering questions, communicating in Spanish only, providing your opinion or

analysis, etc. Due to the intense nature of the program, preparation in advance is essential.

6) Oral exam and Oral presentations: At the end of SPAN s130, you will go to the Center for

Language Studies (Temple and Grove) to take your oral exam, which will be graded by your

instructors. More information about the content and format of the exam will be provided during the

course.

7) Exams: Exams will evaluate your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary as well as reading and

writing skills. There will be one Midterm and one Final exam for SPAN s130 as well as one

Midterm and one Final exam for SPAN s140. The syllabus indicates the dates. Your instructors will

let you know the content that each exam will evaluate.

8) Grading: The final grade, which is not curved, will be calculated as follows:
