Ten Tips
for Protecting Chil- dren and Offering Outreach to Victims/Survivors 1. Sexual abuse is about the victim. Many peopleare affected by abuse but the individual most impacted is the victim who has suffered a violation of trust that can affect his or her entire life.
2. The residual effects of having been abused can last a lifetime. The sense of violation goes deep into a
person’s psyche and feelings of anger, shame, hurt and betrayal can build long after the abuse has taken place. Those who have been abused can heal, but if often takes time, therapy, and the support of loved ones.
3. No one has the right to have access to children.
No one, no matter who they are, has an automatic right to be around children or young people who are in the care of the Church without proper screening and without following the rules.
4. Common sense is not all that common. Dioces-
es, schools, parishes, and especially families, must educate themselves and others on how to protect chil- dren.
5. Child sexual abuse can be prevented. It is critical
to build safety barriers around children and young peo- ple to keep them from harm—such as protective guardians, codes of conduct, background evaluations, policies and procedures, and safety training programs.
6. Feeling heard leads toward healing. Relief from
hurt and anger often comes when one feels heard, when one’s pain and concerns are taken seriously, and a victim/survivor’s suffering, pain, and anger are acknowledged.
7. You cannot always predict who will be an abus- er. Experience shows that most abuse is committed by
someone who has gained the trust of a victim/survivor and his/ her family.
8. There are behavioral warning signs of child abusers. Some abusers isolate a potential victim by
giving him or her undue attention or lavish gifts, others allow young people to participate in activities which their parents or guardians would not approve, such as watching pornography, drinking alcohol, using drugs, and excessive touching, such as wrestling and tickling.
9. People can be taught to identify grooming be- havior. Grooming behaviors are the actions which
abusers take to project the image that they are kind, generous, caring people, while their intent is to lure a minor into an inappropriate relationship. Offenders can be patient and may groom their victim, his or her fami- ly, or community for years.
10. Background checks are important. Background
checks in churches, schools and other organizations keep predators away from children both because they scare off some predators and because they uncover past actions which should ban an adult from working or volunteering with children.

Diez Consejos

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE May 1, 2022
3rd Sunday of Easter
Could it be that God’s image has become so soiled and distorted that it is hard for us to see it? Our self-serving agendas have done a great job twisting God’s image into what profits us. We want our agenda to be God’s agenda and use prayer as the convincing leverage we need. Worse still, our success and egocentric agenda often erases God’s image completely, re- placing it with our own. St. Oscar Romero instructs us that the Son of Man “dies on the cross to cleanse God’s image, which is soiled in today’s humanity, a humanity so enslaved, so selfish, so sinful.” Striving to preserve control of our destinies at all costs, we fail to see the risen suffering servant, the Christ, standing right beside us.
Jesus, who suffered and died on a cross and was raised from the dead, corrects our soiled image of God. He shows us God as God is, not who we want to make God to be. God is the God of the
poor, the weak, and the marginalized. He is the God who tenderly caresses us when we are suffering and hurting, assuring us that all will be safe and well. He is the God of equity, peace, justice, and compassion who wants happiness for each of His children, desiring their wellbeing and success. God goes where men and women are afraid to go, sitting with the lost, the broken, and the sorrowing. St. Oscar Romero challenges us to illuminate with “Christ’s light … even the most hideous cav- erns of the human person: torture, jail, plunder, want, chronic illness. The oppressed must be saved.” The resurrection calls us to be God’s microphone, a messenger, and a prophet (St. Oscar Romero).
Using eyes that see beyond the limited constructs and desires of our world, we can see the true and real Jesus standing before us, calling us to transfor- mation and change. Asking us more than once, “do you love me?” We are beckoned to give an answer. Answering in the affirmative, it is now our task to feed the sheep and the lambs who belong to God. In short, equipped with the power of the resurrection and a corrected image of God our task is to make things better, brighter, holier, more life-giving, and just for all of God’s chil- dren. Considering our choices, our interactions, our philosophies, and aspira- tions, how can we do this?

dsumus, Sancte Spiritus
Prayer of invocation to the Holy Spirit for an ecclesial assembly of governance or discernment (thus synodal)
Every session of the Second Vatican Council began with the pray- er Adsumus Sancte Spiritus, the first word of the Latin original meaning, “We stand before You, Holy Spirit,” which has been his- torically used at Councils, Synods and other Church gatherings for hundreds of years, being attributed to Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560 - 4 April 636). As we are called to embrace this synodal path of the Synod 2021-2023, this prayer invites the Holy Spirit to operate within us so that we may be a community and a people of grace. For the Synod 2021-2023, we propose to use this simplified version, so that any group or liturgical assembly can pray more easily.
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey
together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, for-
ever and ever. Amen.
Title revised from Latin, to have a proper incipit, different from the Adsumus Dominus Sancte Spiritus. The Caeremoniale Episco- porum 1984ss., n. 1173, only proposes the use of the Adsumus but does not give the text. The German version Das Zeremoniale für die Bischöfe, n. 1188, gives a German translation based on the Latin text of the Acta Synodalia of the Council, vol. I/1, p. 159.
Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I pray that you and your families are well during this time. As we have begun the New Year, it is also time that we start our diocesan Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) for 2022. Our CSA theme for 2022
is Journeying Together--The Diocese in Mis-
sion, based on a theme from the Synod in Synodality.
Each year, the CSA serves as a renewed call for all of us to live and practice faith-based stewardship, and it gives us an opportunity, as a diocese and as a parish, to share the light of Christ by being good stewards with what we have received. Saint Peter reminds us, "As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one anoth- er as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10).
The Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) helps support the function and mission of our Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas and our home parish of St. Peter the Apostle.
The mission of our diocese and parish, is the mission of Jesus Christ. Each and every one of us is called to share in that mission.
Your generosity will help our diocese in such ways as in: evangelization, catholic education, and formation, supporting and promoting of vocations, helping the poor and the sick, just to name a few. Also, any amount received over our diocesan assessment will come back to our home parish of St. Peter the Apostle to help us to function and remain an active faithful community.
As we start our Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) for 2022, I would invite you to prayerfully and generously pledge what you can afford to help us reach our parish goal of $115,000. Our parish must pay $111,263 to the Diocese of Las Vegas CSA 2022. Any amount re- ceived over $111,263 is rebated back to our parish.
This is why our parish goal for CSA 2022 is $115,000, so we may hopefully receive a rebate back to St. Peter the Apostle.
In these challenging times, let us thank God for the faith we have been given and our willingness, even in diffi- cult moments, to strengthen one another in faith. May our invitation to participate in the CSA 2022 appeal be met with a generous response.
Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Samuel
Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
At our parish of St. Peter the Apostle, we have many homeless people that congregate on our parish property and ask for mon- ey. You may have seen them after Mass holding signs asking for money. Many of them suffer from mental illness, alcohol abuse, substance abuse, or a combination of the three.
Parishioners with generous hearts sometimes give money to the homeless on our property and the surrounding area, but this has unintended consequences. Often people use this money to buy drugs and alcohol. They leave their trash and used needles on parish property. They even defecate and urinate on parish grounds. We find them sleeping in the pews, in the bathrooms, and on parish property. They have made messes in the bath- rooms and plugged-up the toilets. There are times when staff cannot wake them up because they are passed-out intoxicated.
We have had to call 911 numerous times to help deal with these sometimes dangerous situations.
In a recent news story on our local Channel 3 News, https://
youtu.be/PdCmR0lGY1I, representatives from the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities both recommend that people do not di- rectly give to the homeless on the streets. (This also applies to the homeless asking for money on our church property). They say that giving the homeless money, food, or goods directly on the streets may be causing more harm than good. Giving money to homeless directly can hamper them from getting the services and programs that they need.
Representatives from the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities recommend that well intended givers, whose hearts are in the right place, redirect their generosity to those places that connect the homeless to the services and programs that can help them deal with their specific situations.
I ask that parishioners at St. Peter the Apostle not directly give homeless on our property money or goods. There are many opportunities in our parishes to redirect your generosity to help the poor and homeless. You can place donations in the poor offering box located in the back of the church by the statue and relics of St. Peter. We also have a quarterly collection for Out- reach. The money taken by these collections are sent to Catholic Charites which has many services and programs to help the poor and homeless. We also send money from these collections to the St. Therese Center that has a food bank, Living Grace Home that provides services to homeless pregnant women, the Shade Tree homeless shelter for battered women and children, and to Women’s Resource Center and First Choice pregnancy crisis centers.
Other opportunities to help the poor and homeless are to contrib- ute to the CSA, Catholic Stewardship appeal, as some of this money goes to support Catholic Charities and St. Therese Cen- ter, and our Holy Thursday collection will also go to the St. Vin- cent Lied Dining Facility at Catholic Charities. Our Ash Wednes- day collection also goes to Catholic Charities.
Thank you for your cooperation and generous support.
