July 14-15 -- 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Paul reminds us in his letter today that we are God’s chosen, adopted children. We have been blessed by God in being called and in being given a special share in His life. But this blessing requires that we ac- cept the responsibility of discipleship. Like Amos, though we may not understand why God has given us this blessing and task, we will be given the grace to see it through in faithfulness and trust. How can you act on your call to discipleship this week?

The star above has a double significance. It symbolizes both the Lone Star of Texas and our Blessed Lady under the title Stella Maris, “Star of the Sea.”

The rose on the lower chevronel reminds us of the shield of the Galveston Diocese, from which most of the Austin Dio- cese was taken in 1947. This rose symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Rosa Mystica, “Mystical Rose”

and is again a symbol of new birth as it was in the beginning of the church nearly two thousand years ago.

The wavy lines symbolize the Colorado River, which passes through the center of the diocese, and the golden heart sym- bolizes St. Augustine (Austin) of Hippo. The transfixed arrows, one descending and one ascending, represent St. Austin’s love for God and God’s love for St. Austin as a great doctor of the church.

The diocesan coat of arms was designed by Bishop Louis J.

Reicher at the time the diocese was established in 1948.

The custom of having a coat of arms goes back to medieval times when rulers, officials, large land owners, etc., would have the shields of their soldiers emblazoned with a design symbolizing the family. Since the diocese and its see city takes the name of Stephen F. Austin, Bishop Reicher chose to utilize part of the Aus- tin family coat of arms. This consisted of a horizontal bar charged with three crosses between one chevronel line above and another at the base.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Dear Parishioners,

The pews in the Adoration Chapel will be sent off for refinishing. This project includes the stabiliza- tion of the pews so that the creaking will no longer be a distraction to prayer. Reversible two inches

thick cushions will be placed on the seating area of the pews and new kneelers will be added. The pews are from the original church. The memorial plaques on the ends will remain. The pews will be removed on August 6 and returned the week begin- ning August 27. Chairs will be placed in the Chapel while the pews are removed so that Adoration will continue uninterrupted.

The funding for this project is made possible by a donation from a parishioner.

Several features of the Adoration Chapel were taken from the original church so that the history of prayer for Santa Cruz parish could remain in the modern building. The stones that make up the Chapel are taken from the original church as well as the inte- rior beams and the pews.

Many people make use of the Adoration Chapel for prayer. The recent efforts at restoration will bring this important prayer space to a new level of clarity and freshness. Seating is an es- sential part of a well-ordered prayer space and is mentioned in the narrative of the Last Supper. “When it was evening, he re- clined at table with the Twelve.” (Matt. 26:20) As we are seated or kneeling in the Adoration Chapel we take our place alongside the twelve apostles to adore the Eucharistic Lord.

O God, most wonderful in all Thy ways, Most in this mystery of love, upraise My heart to Thee in canticles of praise!

Your Pastor, Father David.

Queridos Feligreses,

Holy Water Fonts

The holy water fonts as we enter the church are brass with a plastic liner. Great care is taken to assure the holy water is fresh and blessed according to the appropriate formulary. When we enter the church, we take the holy water and bless ourselves making the + sign of the Cross.

Please do not remove the plastic liner to use as a dipper in the flowing holy water font because water then remains between the plastic liner and the brass bowl. The trapped drops of water between the brass and the plastic cause deterioration of the brass finish.

Thank you for helping all of us to keep the holy water fonts in good condition so that we may bless ourselves with a font that is well kept and is a reflection of our respect for the church and Our Lord.

Mateo 19:4-6

We are blessed at Santa Cruz with many persons who desire to offer a Mass Intention for their loved ones either living or deceased.

Our parish policy is: Five Mass Intentions are allowed for each family per year. Two may be scheduled at either the Vigil or Sunday Mass and three on weekdays. Please note that to give more families the opportunity to schedule Mass Intentions, no exceptions can be made.

A Mass Intention can be offered for one person or for a married couple. It can also be directed to an intention such as: for our priests, for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, for peace in the world. Each weekend at the Vigil or Sunday Mass we direct an in- tention for all of our parishioners who are living or deceased. The suggested offering is five dollars for each Mass Intention. To promote clear communication it is advisable to come by the parish office to schedule the Mass Intentions.

Zeal and excitement are a part of every child. This picture book celebrates a young boy’s enthusiasm to put into practice the words of Christ: to feed and clothe the poor, help the needy, and love one’s neighbor.

As Thomas shows his family the items he has packed into his suitcase after hearing a stirring homily at church, they marvel at his inventiveness and loving heart—he is traveling to the Kingdom of Heaven, and he knows what it takes to get there! Thomas and his family figure out a way, with his suitcase, to accomplish the goal that Thomas is so excited about: to arrive at the Kingdom.
