Pastor’s Note
Feliz Navidad! Merry Christmas! For those of you who are back home this weekend visiting family, welcome back home to
your SJV Family. I once heard a definition of the family as the people who accept you. The SJV Family is the place where we accept you. A vivid image of this acceptance this Christmas is the Posadas. Our school has a great Posadas tradition which we continued in person this year. I accompanied Joseph and Mary as they went door to door asking if there was any room.
Each class was instructed to say, "No room, you are not wel- come here." The younger they got, the more difficult it was to say that. Perhaps as adults we explain away why it's okay not
to welcome, not to readily accept others.
Perhaps this is why the Lord said that the Kingdom of God belongs to little children who have big hearts and who readily accept. To- day we welcome the newborn King. May we sing with all the children, "You are welcome here! There is room in this place!" Welcome home everybody. Merry Christmas.

¡Merry Christmas! ¡Feliz Navidad! Para aquellos de ustedes que están de regreso a casa este fin de semana visitando a su familia, bien- venidos a casa a su Familia de SJV. Una vez escuché una definición de la familia como las personas que te aceptan. La Familia de SJV es el lugar donde te aceptamos. Una viva imagen de esta aceptación esta Navidad son las Posa- das. Nuestra escuela tiene una gran tradición de Posadas que continuamos en persona este año. Acompañé a José y María mientras iban de puerta en puerta preguntando si había lugar para ellos. A cada clase se le pidió que dije- ra: "No hay lugar, no eres bienvenido aquí". Lo cual se convirtio en algo muy difícil de decir para los más pequeños.
Quizás, como adultos, explicamos por qué está bien no dar la bienvenida, no aceptar fácilmente a los demás. Quizás por eso el Señor dijo que el Reino de Dios pertenece a los niños pequeños que tienen un gran corazón y que aceptan fácilmente. Hoy damos la bienvenida al Rey recién nacido. Que podamos can- tar con todos los niños, "¡Ustedes son bienvenidos aquí! ¡Aquí hay lugar para ustedes!" Bienvenidos todos a casa. Feliz Navidad.

FAMILY LIFE
Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, the “en-flesh -ment” of God as a human person. In Jesus, God is bod- ily present in the human story. Today we honor the Holy Family, helping us to see that God is active in dai- ly family life. God is near at hand, amidst the tensions, joys, and uncertainties of family life. As our Gospel passage describes, even with family miscommunica- tions and with limited understanding of Jesus’ mission, the Holy Family persevered in their life together. Like many family conflicts, there was no immediate or clear resolution of the issues raised by Jesus and by Mary.
God’s intentions for the family, and for Jesus, were still unfolding. They continued to stay connected with each other and with God. Within the turbulence of family life, they trusted God to actively sustain and guide them into an uncertain future. We are invited to follow their example.

La Navidad celebra la Encarnación, la “en-carna-ción”
de Dios como una persona humana. En Jesús, Dios está pre- sente físicamente en la historia humana. Hoy honramos a la Sagrada Familia, que nos ayuda a ver que Dios está activo en la vida familiar cotidiana. Dios está cerca, en medio de las tensiones, alegrías y las incertidumbres de la vida fami- liar. Como lo describe nuestro pasaje del Evangelio, incluso con la falta de comunicación y con una limitada compren- sión de la misión de Jesús, la Sagrada Familia perseveró en su vida en común. Como en muchos conflictos familiares, no hubo una resolución inmediata o clara en los asuntos pre- sentados por Jesús y María. Las intenciones de Dios hacia la familia y hacia Jesús, seguían desarrollándose. Ellos eran una familia unida y también lo eran con Dios. Dentro de la turbulencia de la vida familiar, confiaron en que Dios los sostenía vivamente y guiaba a un futuro incierto. Estamos invitados a seguir su ejemplo.

What’s Involved in Being a Catechist?
As a catechist, you will plan and teach classes throughout the year with a co-catechist. You will have tremendous amounts of resources (printed, digital and human) at your fingertips to help you along the way. We know you may have questions or concerns — feel free to contact Jose- lyn Martinez, Director of Faith Formation.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph It wasn’t at all what Mary and Joseph expected their life to be like. Almost from the beginning, there were indications that something extraordinary was at work: Mary’s angelic annunciation; Joseph’s strange dream; the puzzling words of Simeon and Anna in the Temple. And now this: during Mary and Joseph’s an- nual Passover journey to Jerusalem, the discovery that their son Jesus was lost—and even when he was found, they didn’t totally recognize their twelve-year -old boy. Today’s feast of the Holy Family reminds us of the perplexities and promise of family life. The mystery of “the Word made flesh” becomes very tan- gible indeed in the routines and foibles of family life—our Christmas gatherings were likely unmistaka- ble reminders of that! From the pure flesh of a new- born child to the wizened flesh of a beloved grand- mother, families are ground zero for glimpsing the wondrous mystery of the Incarnation.

No era en absoluto lo que María y José esperaban que fueran sus vidas. Casi desde el principio, hubo indicios de que algo extraordinario estaba sucediendo: la anunciación angélica a María, el extraño sueño de José, las desconcer- tantes palabras de Simeón y Ana en el Templo. Y ahora es- to: durante el viaje anual de María y José a Jerusalén por la Pascua, el descubrimiento de que su hijo Jesús se había perdido, e incluso cuando lo encontraron, no reconocieron del todo a su hijo de doce años. La fiesta de hoy de la Sa- grada Familia nos recuerda las perplejidades y las promesas de la vida familiar. El misterio del “Verbo hecho carne” se hace muy tangible en las rutinas y debilidades de la vida familiar. Desde la carne pura de un niño recién nacido hasta la carne envejecida de una abuela querida, las familias son el punto cero para vislumbrar el maravilloso misterio de la Encarnación.
