Be careful where you dig!
It’s FREE and easy to prevent damage to natural gas pipelines
Many of the pipeline leaks and emergencies we respond to each
year happen when homeowners and businesses dig on their property
without knowing the location of underground utility lines. These types
of accidents can be avoided by calling
811
before you dig.
Calling 811 is easy and FREE. Here’s how it works:
•
You call
811
(a free call) at least three business days before
you plan to dig
•
Within approximately three business days, the utility lines on your
property will be marked
•
You can then see where your underground utility lines are located,
preventing you from damaging them when you dig
Projects that warrant a call to 811 include the installation of:
•
Septic tanks and sewer lines
•
Swimming pools
•
Wells
•
Sprinkler systems and water lines
•
Basketball goal posts or mailbox posts
•
Fence and deck posts
•
Trees and shrubs
•
Mailboxes
Please note that any lines not installed directly by a utility, such as natural gas
lines for grills, decorative lighting, or water or sewer laterals, must be located

How to recognize a natural gas leak
A natural gas leak can impact you, even if you don’t have natural
gas service at your home or business. It’s possible for natural
gas to migrate into neighboring buildings, including those
without natural gas service, so even if you’re not a Piedmont
Natural Gas customer, leaks from nearby facilities and/or
pipelines could affect you.
•
SMELL
- Natural gas smells like rotten eggs
•
LOOK
- Natural gas leaks often cause bubbling water,
blowing dirt or dead plants. You may also see sink holes
and/or exposed pipe
•
LISTEN
- Natural gas leaks often cause a hissing sound
near a natural gas line or meter

Natural gas is ODORLESS

As a safety feature, Piedmont adds a compound called mercaptan
to natural gas. Mercaptan gives natural gas its rotten egg smell,
making it easily recognizable
•
Natural gas is NONTOXIC
•
Natural gas is not toxic to humans, however it will displace oxygen.
This means that a natural gas leak in a confined environment could
significantly reduce the amount of oxygen in the air and create
a dangerous environment

How do you know if natural gas pipelines are
near your home or business?
Look for a Right-of-Way
What is a right-of-way (ROW)? A pipeline ROW is a strip of land where
a property owner has granted legal rights for Piedmont Natural Gas to operate
a pipeline. Keeping the ROW clear of trees, shrubs, buildings and other
structures helps ensure the integrity and safety of the pipeline. For more
information about what activities are allowed on the ROW, visit:

Look for Pipeline Markers
Pipeline markers are generally located at road, railway
and river crossings, or at fence lines and property
boundaries. Pipelines do not always run in straight
lines so markers may not follow predictable paths.
The placement of markers does not indicate the exact
location of the pipeline.
Piedmont’s pipeline markers will always include:

The company owner (e.g., Piedmont Natural Gas)
