Dear friends,

The news this week is all about money.

On the bright side … we can all be very grateful for the dramatic paydown of our

large debt on Cislini Youth Center. It shrank from $1.8 million to about $200,000 in

less than a month! We have some very generous parishioners (and former

parishion-ers) to thank for that), as well as a large bequest from the estate of Dorothy Franci, the

former church secretary here for whom Sacred Heart was the love of her life.

On the tougher side, the diocese and finance council and I have had to face that our

Sunday collections simply do not cover our operating expenses … and haven’t for

many years. Although we’ve always had windfalls at the last minute to save us, we

need to stop operating in the red.

And so a number of steps have been taken:

1) Two church employees are being let go, and another four have their salaries cut.

2) We will be looking carefully at church operations to check for waste,

duplica-tion and possible trimming back.

3) Chip Campion becomes our new parish “Director of Finances and Facilities,” a

volunteer position he has generously offered to take over for a year.

As you may imagine, cutting back so our income matches our expenses has been very

painful for me and others. But it’s a sign of the times --- everyone everywhere has had

to. And I need to do this now, rather than hand the hot potato to the new pastor.

Peace and All Good!

Queridos amigos:

A Catechist is...

an ordinary person who is extraordinary, because he or she teaches as Jesus did.

A Catechist is a sign of Christian hope in a world turned in on itself.

A Catechist is an expression of the mission entrusted by Jesus to God's People.

A Catechist is the “good news” in flesh and blood in today's humanity.

A Catechist is proof that someone is still wise enough to care about all the most importan things in life.

A Catechist is faithful to the past, open to the future, but especially dedicated to deepening the faith of the

present generation.

A Catechist is the Bible and the Church in human form.

A Catechist is Saint Paul in modern disguise.

A Catechist is the gem who makes it possible for priests, sisters and religious education coordinators to

sleep a bit better at night.

A Catechist is the backbone of the Mystical Body of Christ and the guarantee that the Bible will be printed

tomorrow.

A Catechist is the person who makes Christ come alive to the child who never hears of Him at home.

A Catechist is the busiest person in the parish, who somehow finds time to do those important things which

everyone else is too busy to do.

A Catechist is faith, hope and love attached to arms and legs, aches and pains, family duties and not

enough time.

A Catechist is a person with no time for himself who finds enough time for other people's children who

need to hear about Jesus.

Fr. John Francis Murphy, S.T.D.

We are so blessed at Sacred Heart to have these wonderful people. Thank you for your unending love and

dedication to this very important ministry.

Appropriate items include personal hygiene items for men and women, individual-sized packages of cereal, hard candies (no chocolate - it will melt!), nuts, chips, as well as tea, hot chocolate and coffee bags. The timing of the care package is meant to coincide with our Fourth of July festivities. As we know, today’s military personnel continue to safeguard the American tradition of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that is richly identified and valued as the American way of life. Financial donations to cover shipping costs and to buy missing items will also be welcomed. LANDINGS - WELCOMING RETURNING CATHOLICS - Have you been away and want

to come back? Many Catholics have drifted away from the practice of their faith and find them-selves feeling lost, apart and alone. LANDINGS is a safe place to “land” while you give our 2000 year old Church a second look. If you (or someone you know) have questions and need a compassionate place to share faith journeys, prayer and discuss Catholic spirituality with ordina-ry Catholics who are tordina-rying to live their faith - you are invited to come to an 8-week session beginning Tuesday, June 7, at 14 Stone St., 7:00 PM, and running through July 26.
