Brothers and Sisters,

If the rising heat isn’t enough warning, allow me to welcome you to another Coachella Valley Summer. The extreme heat of the Valley means different things to different people. For some it’s an invitation to get away—or completely escape—to milder climates. Others know that this is a time best spent indoors or in places with great air conditioning. But for others, this is the opportunity to find employment in the upcoming harvest season. Many of the fields in our Valley are bustling with summer fruit and produce just waiting for those who are willing to work long days under a hot sun. There’s nothing easy about our summer harvest season. It’s a labor-intensive, often underpaid, job that many see as a roof over their heads and food on their tables. Even with modern labor laws and regulations, there’s nothing easy when it comes to harvesting the produce needed for the many grocery stores throughout the world.

In the Gospel we hear that Jesus calls his disciples to pray for and labor in the harvest. “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest [and] go on your way” (Lk 10:2). Jesus seeks laborers to the Father’s abundant fields. But these aren’t fields of fruits or vegetables, this is a harvest of a people in need of listening to the saving Word of God. Jesus is looking for willing laborers to save souls and bring hearts to the Good News. But, like any harvest season, Jesus knows that this job won’t be easy! The harvest of faith means hard work—with little resources—in less than ideal conditions. “Go, and behold, I send you like lambs among wolves” (Lk 10:3). A laborer for Christ must be a person of sacrifice, commitment, and love even when facing hatred, calumnies, or rejection.

In recent years, our call to the harvest has become more arduous. The sins of irrelevance and irreverence have taken over our once Christian nation. Society’s modern pluralistic ideals have made God unnecessary and His Church an inconvenience. Add to this the recent controversies within our own hierarchy, and it’s easy to see why so many have chosen to ignore the Message of Salvation. Yet, it’s precisely to this messy (but plentiful) harvest that Jesus calls us. Faced with so much negativity, I don’t blame you for feeling defeated. But remember, God will not abandon His Kingdom; He will never allow it to be destroyed! (2 Cor 4:9). God calls us now, more than ever, to the harvest! He calls us to use our gifts—of time, talents, and treasure—to lead souls to the Saving Promise of Christ. This mission won’t be easy; it will require commitment and sacrifice. For too long we’ve been allowed to remain complacent and uninvolved, and now we’re facing the consequences of our inaction. This isn’t an invitation from your Pastor, it’s Christ who calls us to get involved in the harvest. Will you accept the challenge to generously share the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given you for the re-building of His Church? Much is needed to be done in order to stop the lies—the evils of irreverence and irrelevance—that are keeping so many from the glory of God! Listen to His call. Accept His challenge. Come and labor for Christ!

Queridos Hermanos,

Si el calor no es suficiente alerta, permítanme decirles que hemos llegado a otro verano. El calor extremo del Valle significa algo diferente para cada persona. Para algunos es la invitación a salir de viaje—o completamente escapar—a mejores climas. Otros saben que esta es la temporada para quedarse en casa o ir a donde hay buena climatización. Pero para otros, esta es la oportunidad de encontrar empleo en la cosecha de los campos. Muchos de los campos en el Valle están llenos de frutas y verduras de verano esperando a aquellos dispuestos a trabajar días largos bajo el sol. No hay nada fácil en la cosecha de verano. Es un trabajo difícil, muchas veces mal pagado, pero para muchos significa un techo sobre su cabeza y comida en su mesa. Aún con leyes y regulaciones laborales, no hay nada fácil en cosechar los productos necesarios para los mercados del mundo.

En el Evangelio escuchamos que Jesús invita a sus discípulos a orar por y trabajar en la cosecha. “La cosecha es mucha y los trabajadores pocos; rueguen, pues, al dueño de la mies que envíe trabajadores a sus campos [y] pónganse en camino” (Lc 10:2). Jesús busca obreros para los campos abundantes del Padre. Pero estos campos no son de frutas o vegetales, esta cosecha es de un pueblo que necesita escuchar la Palabra que nos salva. Jesús busca trabajadores dispuestas a salvar almas y atraer corazones a a la Buena Nueva. Pero, como cualquier cosecha, ¡Jesús sabe que el trabajo no es fácil! La cosecha de fe es laboriosa—con pocos recursos—en condiciones menos de lo ideal. “Yo los envío como corderos en medio de lobos” (Lc 10:3). Los obreros de Cristo deben ser personas de sacrificio, compromiso y amor, incluso al enfrentar odio, calumnias o rechazo.

En los últimos años, el llamado a la cosecha se ha hecho más arduo. Los pecados de irrelevancia e irreverencia se han apoderado de esta nación fundada en el cristianismo. Las ideas modernas y pluralistas de la sociedad ha hecho a Dios innecesario y su Iglesia inconveniente. Al añadir a esto las controversias dentro de nuestra propia jerarquía y podemos ver por qué tantos han decido ignorar el Mensaje de Salvación. Sin embargo, es a esta cosecha desordenada (pero abundante) a la cual Jesús nos llama. Ante tanta negatividad, no los culpo por sentirse derrotados. Pero no olvides que Dios nunca abandonará Su Reino; ¡Él no permitirá que nadie lo destruya! (2 Cor 4: 9). ¡Hoy Dios nos llama, más que nunca, a la mies! Él nos llama a utilizar nuestros dones—de tiempo, talentos y tesoro—para llevar almas a la Promesa Salvadora de Cristo. Esta misión no será fácil; requerirá compromiso y sacrificio. Por mucho tiempo se nos ha permitido permanecer complacientes y no involucrados, y ahora enfrentamos las consecuencias de nuestra inacción. Esta no es una invitación de su Párroco, es Cristo quien nos llama a participar en la cosecha. ¿Aceptarás el desafío de compartir generosamente los dones que el Espíritu Santo te dio para la reedificación de su Iglesia? ¡Hay mucho por hacer para detener las mentiras—los pecados de irreverencia y irrelevancia—que ha alejado a muchos de la gloria de Dios! Escucha el llamado y acepta su reto. ¡Sé un obrero para Cristo! Deseándoles Paz,
