En este evangelio vemos como Jesucristo realiza varios milagros especialmente de muchos que estaban endemoniados y con multitud de enfermedades.

Para entender este acto de compasión y de ternura de Jesucristo es necesario entender que, en la época de Jesús, la gente entendía que aquellos que estaban endemoniados o con diversas enfermedades era porque habían sido castigados por Dios, porque habían hecho algo malo en su vida o sus padres lo habían hecho, por lo tanto, eran repudiados por la sociedad y nadie les quería. No tenían nada: ni dignidad ni medios de sobrevivir, ni compasión de nadie. La gente se apartaba de ellos cuando los veían venir. Como si no existieran. Eran los olvidados, los otros, los que estaban solos y eran pobres. En hebreo se les llamaba “anawin,” los pobres y olvidados.

En este evangelio, Jesús no solo les cura físicamente, sino que además les devuelve la dignidad como personas creadas a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Es un milagro doble: cura a los enfermos físicamente y socialmente y además atrae a los demás a seguir a Jesús.

Estos milagros son también un llamado para nosotros. Probablemente no podamos hacer milagros físicos como los hacia Jesús, pero si podemos ayudar a aquellos que quizá hayan perdido un poco de dignidad social porque no tienen tanto como tenemos nosotros. Podemos hacer el milagro de ayudar y cuidar aquellos que son a veces rechazados porque no tienen mucho. La buena noticia es que para eso no hace

falta que nos vayamos a otros países. Esos hermanos y hermanas están aquí, cerca de nosotros, en nuestras ciudades, en muchas de nuestras parroquias que no tienen los medios suficientes para seguir adelante. Por eso, hermanos y hermanas, hoy yo les pido que sigamos a Cristo y a su misión de proclamar el Reino de Dios, no haciendo como muchos de su época que pretendían hacer como que esos pobres no existían, sino siendo nosotros también un milagro para aquellos que nos necesitan y ayudémosle a través de la campaña de Unidos en Misión. ¿Quieres ser parte del Reino de Dios? ¿Quieres ser un milagro para aquellos que no tienen mucho, que son olvidados, que están necesitados?

Every time scripture is proclaimed Christ speaks. The readings assigned for the fifth through the seventh Sundays in Ordinary Time leave the homilist with a wonderful preaching plan renewing our commitment to the Archdiocesan program Together in Mission. Even when a video is presented, a guest speaker shares their story, or pledges are being asked for, a brief one to two-minute homily will help the parishioners hear God’s word in light of Together in Mission.

This morning, our Church in Los Angeles invites us to embrace Together in Mission. And our readings echo that invitation. In our first reading, Job speaks of the misery that fills the days of so many people. He tells of those who lack shelter … those who barely make it from paycheck to paycheck … those whose days “come to an end without hope.” We see such people in our streets and workplaces today.

Today’s Psalm acknowledges such difficult circumstances, but reassures all those who suffer. Because the Lord “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” How does the Lord do this?

Today he still heals people — he shelters them, he feeds them, he teaches them. But he does this through you and me. He does this through a Church whose members come Together in Mission. By using more than words, these actions of love are balms of consolation for those in need.St. Paul writes to tell the Corinthians this “good news.” And he identifies himself as the “slave to all.” As a Christian, St. Paul knows he must live his life in service of others.

We see in today’s Gospel that St. Paul is simply following the example of Jesus. Our Lord heals the sick and rescues the oppressed. In fact, after just one act of healing, he finds he must serve the whole town gathered at his door. And then he goes on to other towns, doing the same thing, “throughout the whole of Galilee.” Love for his neighbors meant taking action and bringing justice.

If we want to be like Jesus we must take part in the good works of his Church — works of healing and shel-tering, teaching and consoling. Jesus comes to our land when we contribute to Together in Mission. Please pray about the contribution you will make.

3 MASS AND ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Western Association of the Order of Malta, together with the Cathedral, will host the Mass and Anointing of the Sick on February 10th at 12:30 pm at the Cathedral. This celebration is held in observance of the 2018 World Day of the Sick, which coincides with the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes (Feb 11). Archbishop José Gomez will preside, with Bishop Robert Barron as Homilist. All are welcome especially those in need of this blessing who are suffering in body or spirit. 1. Please come personally to the parish office at least one month in advance of the date you would like to baptized and present a copy of your child’s birth certificate.

2. Children must be under 6 years of age. If your child surpassed this age, we encourage you to enroll him/ her at the RCIA program, (818) 982-4248.

3. Parents and godparents must attend the pre-baptismal class. No babies or children allowed in class!

4. The donation is $50.00 per child and $70.00 if they are siblings.

5. Godparents must be Roman Catholic and Confirmed, they also must be 18 years and over. If godparents are couple living together, they must be married in the Roman Catholic church. If parents are single, they must have the Sacrament of Confirmation. You must present certificates of these sacraments.
