The ABCs of Stewardship (Cont’d)
By Mary Catherine Stewart, O.P.
D is for Discernment. Discernment implies total
hones-ty. How much of my Ɵme, treasure and talent can I give? Can I give 10% of my earnings? Can I give 10% of my Ɵme to volunteer? Can I give 10% of my talents? Some of us can give more and some of us can give less but in the discernment process I need to look at where my val-ues are. To help me in this process, I took a week and wrote down, how I spent my waking hours—I found that I had “wasted” some Ɵme that could easily be given to volunteering. I looked at my expenses for a month and found that there were things that I really didn’t need that I had bought and this money could go to a charity. The challenge I find is to be totally honest in the discernment process.

EDGE—Thursday, 7:00—8:15 pm. Don’t forget to register for Faith Formation classes.
Edge—The Junior High Faith Formation Program will begin October 2 with a parent/
student meeting.
♦
This year, students will learn about the Seven Sacraments and Catholic Social Justice
teachings. The first semester, the Youth will study each one of the Sacraments, learn the
deeper meaning behind the symbols, and how grace is impacted through the Sacraments. Second
semester, the youth will be introduced to the social teaching of the Catholic Church, using the dignity of
humanity as the basis. The goal is to help young people see the needs of the human family and how their
faith connects them to their brothers and sisters in need.
