October 3rd is the Feast Day of St. Francis
of Assisi. Francis of Assisi was poor only that
he might be Christ-like. He recognized
creation as another manifestation of the beauty
of God. In 1979, he was named patron of
ecology. He did great penance—apologizing to
“Brother Body” later in life—that he might be
totally disciplined for the will of God. Francis’
poverty had a sister, Humility, by which he
meant total dependence on the good God. But
all this was, as it were, preliminary to the heart
of his spirituality: living the gospel life,
summed up in the charity of Jesus and
perfect-ly expressed in the Eucharist. -Franciscan Media

FROM THE DESK OF FR. LUKE... DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE LUKE...
How often does something happen to us or we look at the situation of another and think, “that is so unfair”. We may then wonder where God is or how life is unfair. Either way we tend to blame God for the injustice we perceive. It is the classic “problem of evil” which is an argument against God being “all good, all powerful, and all knowing”. We experience great unfairness and evil in a broken world, so why does a good and powerful God, who knows about the problem, not immediately fix it? Unfortunately, that is a question which we are not capable of answering right now in human history, because we do not yet have the ability to see the full reality of the universe and understand how it all fits into the plan of God.
In addition, although knowledge in itself has value, understanding why God allows evil in the world does nothing for us. We do not have the cosmic ability to fix our broken world. However, even though we neither have the ability to change tragic events nor eliminate the destructive effects of evil; we do have the ability to respond.
In the face of tragedy or evil, God invites us to be with him at the cross. For example, when a loved one dies, we are often tempted to begin a “cheering-up” campaign on the grieved providing such platitudes as: “everything will be OK”; you’re loved one “is an angel now”; or the deceased “is in a better place”. Even if the statement is true, such words do not help with grieving. The fact of the matter is that a loved one has died and that reality will not change. We who are in the world are not able to experience that relationship as we previously were accustomed to. A better response to the grief is to share in it and look to be aware of how the relationship with the deceased is changing. The consistent reality of love is that our relationships with each other and to God changes constantly. The connection you have with your loved ones when you were thirteen is much different from when you are thirty-three. In death, the relation has changed to a pure connection of love which transcends the grave.
The tragedies and evil in the world is not a creation of God but rather a result of our ability to choose to be
contrary to the plan of God destroying to His creation. The story of Adam and Eve put into motion a destructive force which affects the entire world and we continue to propagate such evil by our sins and self-centeredness. Death in this world is the consequence of evil. God’s response to human rebellion was not to leave us in sin and eternal damnation; but rather, to enter the human condition and go to the cross in order to pay the price. After which, God offers us the amazing gift of divine life in the resurrection. Christ communicates to us the Eternal plan of salvation and that death affords a greater level of connection with all whom we love. God, through the Son, has fixed the problem of evil by being present to us and being united to us in our lives. This is the point of the faithful receiving the Eucharist on Sunday to ensure our constant invitation to Christ and to have Him be joined to us in our lives helping us to except the gift of the divine life in the resurrection.
The world is unfair, but in turning from sin and re-ceiving the Eucharist, we “confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father”

Con qué frecuencia nos pasa algo o miramos la situación de otro y pensamos, "eso es tan injusto". Entonces podemos preguntarnos dónde está Dios o qué tan injusta es la vida. De cualquier manera tendemos a culpar a Dios por la injusticia que percibimos. Es el clásico "problema del mal" que es un argumento en contra de que Dios sea "todo bueno, todopoderoso y omnisciente". Experimentamos una gran injusticia y maldad en un mundo quebrantado, entonces, ¿por qué un Dios bueno y poderoso, que conoce el problema, no lo arregla de inmediato? Desafortunadamente, esa es una pregunta que no somos capaces de responder en este momento en la historia de la humanidad, porque todavía no tenemos la capacidad de ver la realidad completa del universo y comprender cómo encaja todo en el plan de Dios.
Además, aunque el conocimiento en sí mismo tiene valor, comprender por qué Dios permite el mal en el mundo no hace nada por nosotros. No tenemos la capacidad cósmica para arreglar nuestro mundo roto. La conexión que tiene con sus seres queridos cuando tenía trece años es muy diferente a cuando tenía treinta y tres. En la muerte, la relación ha cambiado a una conexión pura de amor que trasciende la tumba.
Las tragedias y la maldad en el mundo no son una creación de Dios, sino el resultado de nuestra capacidad de optar por ser contrarios al plan de Dios que destruye Su creación. La historia de Adán y Eva puso en movimiento una fuerza destructiva que afecta al mundo entero y continuamos propagando tal maldad por nuestros pecados y egocentrismo. La muerte en este mundo es consecuencia del mal. La respuesta de Dios a la rebelión humana fue no dejarnos en el pecado y la condenación eterna; sino más bien, entrar en la condición humana e ir a la cruz para pagar el precio. Después de lo cual, Dios nos ofrece el asombroso regalo de la vida divina en la res-urrección. Cristo nos comunica el plan eterno de salvación y que la muerte proporciona un mayor nivel de conexión con todos los que amamos. Dios, a través del Hijo, ha solucionado el prob-lema del mal estando presente y unido a nosotros en nuestras vidas. Este es el objetivo de que los fieles reciban la Eucaristía el domingo para asegurar nuestra constante invitación a Cristo y que Él se una a nosotros en nuestra vida ayudándonos a excep-tuar el don de la vida divina en la resurrección.
El mundo es injusto, pero al apartarnos del pecado y recibir la Eucaristía, "confesamos que Jesucristo es el Señor para la gloria de Dios Padre".
