The Nativity of the Lord

One of the most beautiful things about the Christmas story is its human simplicity. How very ordinary! How relatable! We see a young family caught up in government regulations, encountering difficulty booking travel arrangements. We see a belated baby shower filled with the most unlikely at- tendees. Yet, if you attended Christmas Mass during the day, the Gospel does not contain the familiar story of

over-crowded inns and hay-lined mangers. It features some- thing much more mysterious. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God … all things came to be through him.”

Matthew, Mark, and Luke give us the Christmas story from the human perspective. John’s Gospel tells the Christmas story from the divine perspective.

“What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race.” C.S. Lewis described Christmas as God parachuting down behind enemy lines. Jesus entered into a world darkened by sin, and it isn’t so different today.

We can find it in the complications of our own lives and the lives of our families. We can find it in our cities, our nation, our world. But it wasn’t only the star that shone on Christmas night. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

In the midst of all that is so very human — whether the humdrum or the horrible — “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” No matter what we bring into this Christmas day, God enters our existence. He enters our experiences. When we allow God into our lives in a new way, when we surrender to Him our lingering areas of darkness, then we will “[see] his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” It’s time to welcome Him.

La Natividad del Señor

“En el principio ya existía aquel que es la Palabra, y aquel que es la palabra estaba con Dios y era Dios.” Es la frase que va al punto dando la Buena Nueva de la Liturgia de este Domingo. La Iglesia entera canta de alegría junto con los ángeles en el cielo y los pastores en la tierra. “Cuando los ángeles los dejaron para volver al cielo, los pastores se dijeron unos a otros: ‘Vayamos hasta Belén, para ver eso que el Señor nos ha anunciado.’” (Lucas 2:15). Dios se hizo hombre y habitó entre nosotros. Hemos visto su gloria y su humildad. Los ángeles aseguran que el Niño es maravilloso, es la promesa de salvación.

Para una reflexión más profunda encontré estos pensamientos del Papa Francisco sobre la Navidad: “Al igual que María, San José y los pastores, también nosotros hemos recibido la señal del nacimiento de Dios.", “La Navidad consiste en que Dios está siempre ahí, esperándonos.” y, “En esto consiste el anuncio de la noche de Navidad. Dios no conoce los arrebatos de ira y la impaciencia; está siempre ahí, como el padre de la parábola del hijo pródigo, esperando atisbar a lo lejos el retorno del hijo perdido.” Al leer lo que el Papa dice, ¿Qué sentimientos afloran en tu corazón? ¿Qué es lo que Jesús Niño te pide que transformes está Navidad? La temporada de Navidad es hermosa y da comienzo la noche del 24 de diciembre y termina el Domingo con la fiesta del Bautismo del Señor. Entonces, ¿Qué hacer con la propaganda desde el mes de noviembre? Pues, ojo, ese no es el mensaje de Navidad que anunciaron los ángeles.
