This time, we are going to select and review bilingual dictionaries and we are going to understand the sense of textual components.

Esta vez, vamos a seleccionar y revisar diccionarios bilingües y vamos a entender el sentido de los componentes textuales.

What a bilingual dictionary is?

¿Qué es un diccionario bilingüe?

Well, a bilingual dictionary is a useful tool when you study a foreign language.

Bueno, un diccionario bilingüe es una herramienta útil cuando estudias un idioma extranjero.

It can help you to add new words to your vocabulary and learn the meanings of unfamiliar words that you see or hear.

Puede ayudarlo a agregar nuevas palabras a su vocabulario y aprender el significado de palabras desconocidas que ve o escucha.

Bilingual dictionaries are different from monolingual dictionaries because they have two parts.

Los diccionarios bilingües se diferencian de los monolingües porque tienen dos partes.

The first part contains the words of one language with the meanings of the words in the other language.

La primera parte contiene las palabras de un idioma con los significados de las palabras en el otro idioma.

The second part has the opposite organization. For example, in a bilingual English – Spanish dictionary one half of the dictionary provides English words with Spanish meanings, and the other half gives Spanish words with English meanings.

La segunda parte tiene la organización opuesta. Por ejemplo, en un diccionario bilingüe inglés- español, la mitad del diccionario proporciona palabras en inglés con significados en español y la otra mitad en palabras en español con significados en inglés.

In an English - Spanish dictionary, words are arranged in alphabetical order in both languages.

Remember that in English and Spanish dictionary, the alphabets are almost identical.

En un diccionario inglés - español, las palabras están ordenadas alfabéticamente en ambos idiomas.

Recuerde que, en el diccionario de inglés y español, los alfabetos son casi idénticos.

The top of each dictionary page has guide words. These words show the user the first and last words on that page. The user knows that all of the words on the page are listed alphabetically between the two guide words.

La parte superior de cada página del diccionario tiene palabras de guía. Estas palabras muestran al usuario la primera y la última palabra de esa página. El usuario sabe que todas las palabras de la página se enumeran alfabéticamente entre las dos palabras guía.

Bilingual dictionary give a lot of information to their users. You can find keys to the symbols and abreviations that a dictionary uses in the first pages of the dictionaries.

Los diccionarios bilingües brindan mucha información a sus usuarios. Puede encontrar claves para los símbolos y abreviaturas que utiliza un diccionario en las primeras páginas de los diccionarios.

A word and its meaning in a dictionary is called an entry.

Una palabra y su significado en un diccionario se llama entrada.

Head Word is a Word in a dictionary that is followed by its meaning.

Head Word: es una palabra en un diccionario seguida de su significado.

Parts of speech

Parts of speech in English.

Partes de las oraciones en inglés.

It is important to recognize the part of speech of a Word, you are looking up in a bilingual dictionary.

Es importante reconocer la parte gramatical de una palabra que está buscando en un diccionario bilingüe.

This helps find the correct meanings or find the right Word when there are several posible words.

Esto ayuda a encontrar los significados correctos o encontrar la palabra correcta cuando hay varias palabras posibles.

Noun – the name of a person (boy), place (store), thing (table), or idea (freedom).

Sustantivo: el nombre de una persona (niño), lugar (tienda), cosa (mesa) o idea (libertad).

A proper noun is the name of a specific person or place and begins with a capital letter (John, New York). A compound noun is a noun formed from two other words (bathroom, building site)

Un nombre propio es el nombre de una persona o lugar específico y comienza con una letra

mayúscula (John, Nueva York). Un sustantivo compuesto es un sustantivo formado a partir de otras dos palabras (baño, obra).

English headwords are divided into syllables.

Los encabezados en inglés se dividen en sílabas.

After the headword , you see the correct pronunciation in phonetic symbols.

Después de la palabra principal, verá la pronunciación correcta en símbolos fonéticos.

Next is the part of speech(noun, verb, etc.).

La siguiente es la parte del discurso (sustantivo, verbo, etc.).

Finally, you see the meaning in Spanish. If there is more than one meaning of a word, each meaning is numbered.

Finalmente, ves el significado en español. Si hay más de un significado de una palabra, cada significado está numerado.

Verb: an action (run) or state of being (be, seem).

Verbo: acción (correr) o estado del ser (ser, parecer).

Adjective: a word that gives more information about a noun (small boy, Brown table).

Adjetivo: palabra que da más información sobre un sustantivo (niño pequeño, mesa marrón).

Adverb: a word that gives more information about a verb (run slowly), an adjective (very pretty), or another adverb (very slowly).

Adverbio: palabra que da más información sobre un verbo (corre despacio), un adjetivo (muy bonito) u otro adverbio (muy despacio).

Pronoun: a word used in place of a noun (he, we, you, us, them).

Pronombre: una palabra que se usa en lugar de un sustantivo (él, nosotros, tú, nosotros, ellos).

Preposition: a word that shows the relationship between a noun and another part of a sentence (on the table, after, school, toward the corner).

Prepositions can show relationships of time, place, or direction.

Preposición: palabra que muestra la relación entre un sustantivo y otra parte de una oración (en la mesa, después de la escuela, hacia la esquina). Las

preposiciones pueden mostrar relaciones de tiempo, lugar o dirección.

Article. A Word before a noun that shows whether it is a particular example of something (the) or a general example of something (a, an).

Artículo. Una palabra antes de un sustantivo que muestra si es un ejemplo particular de algo (el) o un ejemplo general de algo (a, an).

Conjuction: a Word that connects words or parts of sentences (and,or, but).

Interjection: a word of phrase to express surprise, agreement, or emotions Oh! Ouch!

Interjección: una palabra para expresar sorpresa, acuerdo o emociones. ¡Oh! ¡Ay!

Actividad #1

Find three headings (words or definitions) in your bilingual dictionary write in your notebooy and underline with a different color and name each part that follows the headings (pronuciation, part of speech and translation).

Encuentra tres encabezados (palabras o definiciones) en tu diccionario bilingüe, escríbelos en tu cuaderno y subraya con un color diferente y nombra cada parte que sigue a los encabezados (pronuciation, part of speech and ranslation).

Use the example given in the sections “I EXPLAIN YOU…”.
