REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Would you like to register your family for the Religious Education Program? You may do so in the parish office. Classes begin this week.

A parent/guardian must bring each child’s baptismal certificate and complete the registration forms. The total cost should be paid at the time of registration. Parishioners with financial difficulties may meet with one of the priests to discuss a payment plan. All tuition of previous year must be paid in full before registering for the new school year.

October Street Retreat

Any young adult from the parish 16 – 45 years old who would like to make the October Street Retreat should see Brother Ed, OFM. The retreat will be a seven-mile walk throughout the Joliet area. Those making the retreat will mediate of the seven sacraments of the church and the environment of creation that will surround them. Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 22 September 2019

Surviving. Jesus, this week and last, does not look on us in negative ways. He seeks us out with love and compassion. He urges us to be daring, trustworthy, and resourceful. Quite a challenge! But it is the way we survive among the temptations to seek after more things, misuse or mismanage thingsof others, trust possessions over God. It is the way we heed Amos’ plea to attend fairly to the poor.

• How will I “survive” this week by trusting God?

• How will I look after the poor in my town?

• How can I not be owned by possessions?

Retiro de la calle

Cualquier adulto joven de la parroquia que tenga entre 16 y 45 años que desee realizar el Retiro de la calle en octubre debería ver al Hermano Ed, OFM. Sobreviviente. Jesús, esta semana y la última, no nos mira de manera negativa. Nos busca con amor y compasión. Nos insta a ser audaces, confiables e ingeniosos. Todo un reto! Pero es la forma en que sobrevivimos entre las tentaciones de buscar más cosas, mal uso o mal manejo de los demás, confiar en las posesiones sobre Dios. Es la forma en que prestamos atención a la petición de Amos de atender de manera justa a los pobres.

Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

You cannot serve both God and mammon. LK 16:13

We probably heard these words form the Gospel many times. The parable of this week’s Gospel is a very complex and confusing one. Commentators point in out that there are no heroes in this story. In fact, Jesus acknowledges the crafty steward’s cleverness. But, the steward was not clearly a person of integrity. What is the point of the parable and how does it address the teaching of not serving both God and mammon?

I think that this parable teaches us of the importance of charity, but most importantly, the attitude we have that underlies our charity. The crafty steward lowered the debt of the master’s debtors. Their savings lowered the

steward’s cash on hand. It could be said that he took a loss as he reduced the debtor’s debt. The only problem was that he was not managing his own money. It was his master’s money. We can speculate that there was a portion of that money that went in the steward’s pocket. Charity is

laudable, but not so laudable when it is done with another’s money.

Pope Francis offers a good reflection on the question of charity in light of the Gospel teaching in the apostolic exhortation EvangeliiGuadium, The Joy of the Gospel. He indicates that devotional and charitable practices can be very shallow if there is no consideration of the greater good.

He also states that deeds done in small acts of charity can soothe our conscience and should not be the sum total of our response to God. Our response to the Gospel should be a whole hearted commitment in expressing and

demonstrating the Reign of God (EG #180, Pope Francis).

This is seen and witnessed in all aspects of our life as a converted life of charity and self giving. Our life of charity should be an expression of our self giving in our family, among our co-workers, friends, and our willingness to promote the common good, even at times when we are tempted to be biased and divisive.

The point of the parable reminds us that much of our selfishness is motivated by money. Many Gospel teachings in Luke address the question of money. We see this for example in the parable of the rich man who hoarded his possessions(12:13-21),the rich young man told to sell his possessions and give to the poor (LK 18:18-23), and Jesus’

teaching on the dangers of wealth (LK 18:24-27).

Perhaps today we can reflect on our acts of charity. Do they express a sincere love of God and a sign of self giving? We can demonstrate the power of Christ’s love in our efforts to give of ourselves in His name. Our lives give witness that we serve only one master.

Probablemente escuchamos estas palabras del Evangelio muchas veces. La parábola del Evangelio de esta semana es muy compleja y confusa. Los comentaristas señalan que no hay héroes en esta historia. De hecho, Jesús reconoce la astucia del astuto administrador. Pero, el administrador no era claramente una persona íntegra. ¿Cuál es el punto de la parábola y cómo aborda la enseñanza de no servir a dos patrones?

Creo que esta parábola nos enseña la importancia de la caridad, pero más importante, la actitud que tenemos que subyace a nuestra caridad. El astuto administrador bajó la deuda de los deudores del amo. Sus ahorros redujeron el efectivo disponible del administrador. Se podría decir que sufrió una pérdida al reducir la deuda del deudor. El único problema era que no estaba administrando su propio dine- ro. Era el dinero de su amo. Podemos especular que hubo una porción de ese dinero que se fue al bolsillo del admi- nistrador. La caridad es loable, pero no tan loable cuando se hace con el dinero de otro.

El Papa Francisco ofrece una buena reflexión sobre la cuestión de la caridad a la luz de la enseñanza del Evange- lio en la exhortación apostólica EvangeliiGuadium, La Alegría del Evangelio. Indica que las prácticas devociona- les y caritativas pueden ser muy superficiales si no se con- sidera el bien mayor. También afirma que los actos realiza- dos en pequeños actos de caridad pueden calmar nuestra conciencia y no deben ser la suma total de nuestra res- puesta a Dios. Nuestra respuesta al Evangelio debe ser un compromiso sincero para expresar y demostrar el Reino de Dios (EG # 180, Papa Francisco). Esto es visto y presen- ciado en todos los aspectos de nuestra vida como una vida convertida de caridad y entrega. Nuestra vida de caridad debe ser una expresión de nuestra entrega a nuestra fami- lia, entre nuestros compañeros de trabajo, amigos y nues- tra voluntad de promover el bien común, incluso en los mo- mentos en que estamos tentados a ser sesgados y divisi- vos.

El punto de la parábola nos recuerda que gran parte de nuestro egoísmo está motivado por el dinero. Muchas en- señanzas del Evangelio en Lucas abordan la cuestión del dinero. Vemos esto, por ejemplo, en la parábola del hom- bre rico que atesoraba sus posesiones (12: 13-21), el joven rico dijo que vendiera sus posesiones y que diera a los po- bres (LK 18: 18-23), y Jesús ' enseñando sobre los peligros de la riqueza (LK 18: 24-27).

Quizás hoy podamos reflexionar sobre nuestros actos de caridad. ¿Expresan un amor sincero a Dios y una señal de entrega? Podemos demostrar el poder del amor de Cristo en nuestros esfuerzos por darnos a nosotros mismos en su nombre. Nuestras vidas dan testimonio de que servimos a un solo patron.
