After accompanying his bishop on a voyage in which he encountered many who had strayed into the dualist Albigensian heresy, St. Dominic (born Domingo de Guzmán in Calaruega, Spain) envisioned an order especially dedicated to preaching for the salvation of souls. His nights were spent in contemplation of the Word, his days in the preaching of the Word—it was said that he spoke only “to God or about God.” Later, Thomas Aqui- nas expressed this characteristic rhythm of Dominican life: to contemplate and to hand on to others what has been contem- plated. Pope Honorius III approved the foundation of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, in 1216. Dominic also founded a community of contemplative nuns in 1206. He died in 1221.
