From Laudato Si, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment: Christian spirituality proposes an alternative understanding of the quality of life, and encourages a prophetic and contemplative lifestyle, one capable of deep enjoyment free of the obsession with consumption. We need to take up an ancient lesson, found in different religious traditions and also in the Bible. It is the conviction that “less is more”. A constant flood of new consumer goods can baffle the heart and prevent us from cherishing each thing and each moment.
To be serenely present to each reality, however small it may be, opens us to much greater horizons of understand- ing and personal fulfillment. Christian spirituality proposes a growth marked by moderation and the capacity to be happy with little. (#222)
DONUT SOCIAL after all the Masses this weekend of May 21/22. Please join us there!
MISSIONARY COOPERATION SUNDAY
This year, Missionary Cooperation Sunday is the weekend of June 4th and 5th. As with the past couple of years, because of restrictions, we will not host a missionary but instead will hear homily letter written by a missionary. Our parish this year is supporting Archdiocese of Tororo in Uganda. Fr. Deogratias Ekisa, a priest from the Archdio- cese says, “the average income of our parishioners is rather limited, about $1,000 per family per year, which comes mainly from small-scale farming. And yet despite their meager
resources, the people support the work of the Church to the best of their ability.” Realizing that it has been a difficult few years for all of us, we can only imagine how difficult it has been for people who make so little money in countries with no or very few safety nets. Please be as generous as possible through prayer and financial support in helping to offer a safety net that the Archdiocese of Tororo is providing for her people.
PARISH SUMMER FESTIVAL NEWS In preparation for our summer festival, which will take place August 3-6, we will be in need of the following:

SPX PAPER RECYCLING DUMPSTERS– We are having trouble with the recycling company keeping up with emptying our dumpsters. We do not make any money on these, but we have them available to support good stewardship of the earth. Since the City also picks up recycling at your curb, please use the City as your first option. Fr. Jim
RETURNING TO ORDINARY LIFE
Six weeks into our Easter rejoicing, the Church gives us readings today that start preparing us for a return to ordinary life. The Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel both dwell on proper daily behavior for followers of Jesus, while the reading from Revelation reminds us why we bother with laws at all. In Acts, leaders of the church meet to discuss which essential ele- ments of the Mosaic Law converts must obey if they wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ. John’s Gospel reflects back to the Last Supper discourse when Jesus himself emphasizes the im- portance of obeying God’s commandments. Observing God’s law, says Jesus, shows a desire to be intimate with the Lord.
We follow rules not for their own sake, but to love God and neighbor better. This more excellent love brings us closer to Revelation’s vision of paradise,
gleaming with “the splendor of God.”Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
