‘“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent
me draw him,
and I will raise him on the last day.
It is written in the prophets:
They shall all be taught by God.
Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him
comes to me.”’
~ John 6: 44-45

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Joachim,
Last week was an exciting milestone as we celebrated most of our Sunday Masses with all of our liturgical ministers – including altar servers! Although this was an accomplishment, the returning of our liturgical ministers for all our Sunday Masses will be an ongoing process. The
parish is beginning to contact our new volunteers and in the next several weeks, we will be having practice ses- sions to train our new liturgical ministers. We are always still looking for volunteers in English and Spanish.
In addition, our parish Seminarian, Ethen O’Campo, finished his summer job working in the Parish Office. We want to thank Ethen for his work this summer, and pray for him as he returns to Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon to continue to study and discern for the priesthood. Praying for priestly vocations should especially be a priority for all of us, since in the next several years we will have a number of priests retiring from active ministry.
Finally, next Saturday at the 6:00 PM Spanish Mass, Adoracion Nocturna will be celebrating their 14th Anniver- sary with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament following the Mass. Our first Bishop of Orange, William Johnson, established monthly adoration to the Blessed Sacrament in each parish to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life as a priority. This is one reason our Diocese has been blessed over the years with a number of priests to serve in our parishes. Thank you, Adoracion Nocturna.
Take care and God bless,
Fr. Steve Correz

Summer & The Heat Are Here!
Everyone wants to dress comfortably, but we also need to show respect to God, His House and one another. Our dress in church needs to be clean and modest. Unfortunately, many modern styles are anything but modest. Please avoid form-fitting clothes; skimpy shorts or skirts (think extended-length or to the knee); and shirts which are too revealing, have inappropriate sayings or images, or expose the belly. Parents, please help your children with this. Thank you!
¡Gracias!

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly
I know the church celebrated this day last Sunday but in case you missed it I wanted you to reflect on what the Pope said.
Pope Francis announced last January that World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly be celebrated each year on the fourth Sunday of July, coinciding with the feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s parents and Jesus’ grand- parents, Sts. Joachim and Anne. Grandparents and the Elderly are so important to our communities and our Church.
By word and by prayer, and by the sufferings that advanced age brings with it, older people have always been witnesses and apostles of the faith in Christian communities and in families.
Pope Frances used these poetic words: “All that blossoms on the tree comes from that which is under the ground."
Many of our parishioners are going through times of loneliness, uncertainty and sadness. As members of the Church we are called to reach out to the Elderly of the parish. Make the call you’ve been wanting to make, say hello, send a card, go visit. These actions fit into Charity, one of the Theological Virtues that our Catholic Faith teaches us.
As a high school student, I can remember carrying a stack of textbooks, barely able to hold their weight. A classmate noticed my apparent struggle and asked if they could assist. I responded with a sharp, “No, I got it!” A few years later, as a young adult, I was on a mission trip to Jamaica. One day we moved forty-pound cement blocks for nearly two hours without rest or even a break for water. Another volunteer noticed my fatigue and asked if they could sub in for me. My response? You guessed it: “No, I’m fine!”
I can do it on my own…I don’t need anyone…I can’t trust anyone…I can only trust myself. Have you ever said anything like this? Or, have you ever believed that you could make it through this life on your own?
We live in a time where being independent, totally independent, is a sought-after quality. Don’t get me wrong; independence is not a bad thing. It becomes a problem when we believe we can do everything ourselves. The problem? It can shove others out, most notably Jesus.
“Without me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5). The truth is we cannot do everything ourselves and we were not made to do everything ourselves. Some- times we need to go back to the basics. We already have a Savior, and His name is Jesus, not me (Kelly Colangelo), and not you. We have a God who
chooses us, desires us, loves us, and wants to be in a relationship with us. Countless stories in Scrip- ture illustrate people who needed a Savior. We are all in need of a Savior. Identifying the trap of “I can do everything on my own” or “I don’t need any- body” is crucial to a life of freedom. Here are some important reminders for us to better recognize our self-reliance.
1. The devil doesn’t want us to find this lie Through many experiences in life, usually those associated with pain cause us to adopt the mindset that “I can only depend on myself.” Then once we do, bang! The devil pounces and does not relent. The author and father of lies (John 8:44) will do every- thing he can to prevent us from untangling this lie in our life and lure us away from the truth. He wants us to believe that we are alone, that we carry bur- dens alone, and that we don’t have or need anyone.
How do we fight this? We must stay grounded in the reality that we did not make ourselves. We came to exist through others and, ultimately, another. We need others. We need Jesus. What is the source of your self-reliance? What lie have you believed?
2. We are made for community
You and I are hardwired for relationships. One of the downsides of self-reliance is that you don’t let other people help you. This can lead to you being over- whelmed or making others feel bad (unintentionally) because they feel like you are not open to inviting them into your life. It is not bad if we can complete a task independently; the bad thing is when we refuse to let others help (especially when you can really use the help). The importance of embracing vulnera- bility is crucial to connecting in community. Some- times, self-reliance can rob us of authentic and true

100 Things Every Catholic Teen Should Know Did Jesus really rise from the dead?
100 Things Every Catholic Teen Should Know What is a Sacrament
The Earth is comprised mainly of water. Your body is comprised mainly of water. You can live longer without food than you can without water.
Get the idea? We need water to live. Baptism is about a lot more than water.
Some people have the mistaken idea that the waters of Baptism are just about “washing away”
the stain of original sin. Yes, they do that, but it is about so much more than that. Water is a key element to Baptism, but there are several other symbols, like the candle (light), the oil, the white garment, etc.
Baptism does not just erase sin; it welcomes you into the family. Through Baptism you are not
“cleaned off,” you are re-created. In the Sacrament of Baptism you are made new; God does not just forgive you, God the Father adopts you.
Water symbolizes the death to old life and the rising in new life. Every time we bless ourselves with holy water when we enter the Church, we renew our baptismal vows, dying to the world and living for God.
The oil signifies our anointing and our reception of the Holy Spirit. The candle reminds us to be a light to others (John 8:12) and to let Christ’s light shine through us (Matthew 5:14-16). The white garment signifies our purity and sinlessness as we “put on Christ” (Galatians 3:27).
Baptism is one of the Sacraments of Initiation.
We baptize babies to offer them the free gift of God’s grace as early as possible. If you were baptized as a child, thank your parents for ensuring you received that gift. If you would like to learn more about Baptism in the faith so that you can be baptized, check with your parish and look into R.C.I.A.
