FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners,
Because we are doing the in-pew outreach for the 2016 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL at this weekend’s Masses, we are going to postpone today’s second-collection (Catholic Relief Ser-vices), which our envelope company mistakenly dated for now, instead of the correct occasion (May 21/22).
If you already submitted this envelope, or are doing so today, be assured that the checks will be cashed and all monies held aside for the intended purpose when we reach that weekend in May.
The ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL is confusing many folks because of last year’s
―GENERATIONS OF FAITH‖ CAPITAL CAMPAIGN. The parish’s CATHOLIC APPEAL goal was ac-tually folded into our total Capital Campaign goal, since our diocese relies on the APPEAL money on an yearly basis.
With the diocesan annual budget being 28-30 million dollars, eight million of the budget de-pends on the ANNUAL CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN. For fiscal solvency, it is imperative that these funds be generated each year.
The CAPITAL CAMPAIGN is something that happens a few times in one’s lifetime, and un-derwrites the Lord’s work by building funds and endowments for the future. It is a strategic, compre-hensive and larger-scale initiative.
The ANNUAL CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN advances the church’s mission in the present, by sup-porting the daily operation of critical ministries, such as those described in the recently-shown video and in the printed materials.
I hope all at St. Raphael’s will give the APPEAL a best-faith effort and do our part to fund these priority projects that move forward the cause of Jesus in Queens and Kings counties.
As always, many thanks! -Father Jerry Jecewiz
P.S. On a different note, we all owe words of appreciation to Richard O’Connor for doubling the number of sinks in the Brennan Hall Ladies Room this past week, and making that facility a veritable Hall of Mirrors for those into preening. Thanks, Richard!
ST. RAPHAEL’S “MARIACHI ACADEMY” ON TV…
The newly-opened branch of the Mariachi Academy of New York here at St. Raphael’s was the focus of a TV news segment in connection with Pope Francis’ recent pilgrimage to Mexico. Visit http://youtu.be/AOwq2u93U1M to view the piece (in English, with Spanish subtitles), to hear from its Director, Ramon Ponce, and an eager class of students, as well as to see some local shots here.

ANOTHER BLAST FROM THE PAST: Cour-tesy of Richard O’Connor, another view of St. Raphael’s from long ago. Same shooting spot as last week’s picture (Greenpoint Avenue at the corner of Calvary Cemetery), but a differ-ent angle. Notice the level expanse where the L.I.E. currently is, and the 3-storey rectory, as opposed to the current 2-story one. The ear-lier rectory was destroyed in a fire in the 1960’s.
