FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners,

Today our parish hosts its annual Summer Mission Appeal, which benefits the Piarist Fathers.

We welcome Father Andrew Berinyuy, who will speak at our parish Masses in behalf of the

Central African Province of his religious order.

We had included information about the Piarists in last week’s bulletin. If you missed it, we

re-print it elsewhere in this issue. Please familiarize yourself with the wonderful evangelization outreach

they do in the name of Jesus.

This weekend’s second collection (the collection after Communion) is for our missionary

group. There is no corresponding envelope in the parish-support packet.

If you came unprepared for this, we’ll hold off sending out the collection until the end of the

week. You could drop off a donation at the rectory until then, in an envelope marked MISSIONARY

or PIARIST FATHERS. Checks should have the same notation on them, but be made out to St.

Raphael’s Church, so that one exchange check can be drafted and forwarded.

Thank you for your generosity to the missions.

-Father Jerry Jecewiz

nuestra salvación, escucha a tu iglesia misionera.

SUMMER MISSION APPEAL (SECOND COLLECTION) THIS WEKEND: WHO ARE THE PIARIST FATHERS?

The Order of the Pious Schools commonly known as the Piarist Fathers are a Religious Order founded in Rome on March 6, 1617 by Saint Joseph Calasanz (1557-1648)- a priest of Spanish origin. We completely dedicate ourselves to the education of children and youth especially the poor in schools, parishes and youth non-formal education centers.

The Piarist Province of Central Africa covers four countries in the central African region namely: Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo. In these countries, we run a total number of 11 Elementary Schools, 5 High Schools, 2 Technical and vocational Schools. The total enrollment in these schools ranges between 6000 to 7000 students. To strengthen our collaboration with the local church, we also run 6 parishes. To each parish we have attached a Socio-educative and Cultural center to drill children and youths in non-formal educative activities. Our province has a total number of 125 Religious (58 Finally professed/Priests; 67 seminarians; 19 novices; 27 prenovices).

The context in which we are working is a very challenging one: the socio- political instability and poor govern-ance in the above named countries have rendered many youths hopeless. Youth underemployment is a great challenge and it is pushing many youths to despair. Some of these youths engage in a search for “greener pastures” abroad thus leading to migration and brain drain. For those other youths who are not daring enough, the end result is usually high crime waves among other ills. The situation is very pathetic and something needs to be done and urgently. The Piarist Fathers think that the way out of this situation is through an education that seeks to empower the youths by helping them to discover and develop their talents.

We are therefore requesting for help in this mission appeal to do the following:

· We would like to build more classrooms to be able to accommodate and offer Christian education to as many chil-dren as possible

· The available school buildings are dilapidating and are in great need of repairs. In addition to this, these schools do not have the basic or essential facilities in a school. There are schools without electricity, potable water or even toilets. · Offer scholarships and school material to students from very poor backgrounds

· Equip the few technical and vocational centers that we are running and build more in other areas

· Support the “Caravane of Education” program. In this program we intend to educate the rural population on some issues that concern them directly such as health care, social welfare, conflict resolution, micro-projects etc.

· Train young people and help them start self-reliant projects

· Formation of teachers in our schools and catechists and other pastoral leaders in our parishes.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity given to us to share our missionary experience with you. On behalf of those we serve, we want to express our immense gratitude for your spiritual and material support.
