SAVE US FROM KNOWING IT ALL

The most memorable, the most profound and affecting televised event of my life came a long time ago, in the fall of 1976, when I encountered public television’s adaptation of Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man, a multipart series in which Bronowski’s massive intellect addressed the emergence, the evolution, and what he believed to be the final triumph of our humanity. In thirteen episodes Bronowski ranged across the agricultural and industrial revolutions, astronomy, architecture and engineering, mathematics, metallurgy and chemistry, Newtonian and relativistic mechanics, Darwinism, atomic and quantum physics, DNA, neurobiology, and artificial intelligence. And it seemed to me --watching Dr. Bronowski talk, week after week, with ease and grace about the entire conceptual apparatus of human knowledge -- that right here was a man who knew next to everything. And then, in the most emotional moment I have ever witnessed on film, Jacob Bronowski took off his shoes to limp across some hurtful rocks, to wade into the mud of his parent’s ashes. He walked in a business suit into a flotsam of hatred, and he knelt down, and he took a handful of wet, dripping earth, and he looked into the camera, and he said, “This is the
concentration camp and crematorium at Auschwitz. This is where people were turned into numbers. Into this pond were flushed the ashes of some four million people. And that was not done by gas. It was done by arrogance. It was done by
ignorance. When people believe they have absolute knowledge, with no test in reality, this is how they behave. This is what men do when they aspire to the knowledge of gods.”
And then Jacob Bronowski, an atheist I believe, began to pray.
Attempting to explain all holocausts, he stood at the cyclonic intersection of knowledge and certainty -- that nowhere place where judgment suspends, where people really do believe they know it all, an obscene place where compassion doesn’t stand a chance in hell. And Jacob Bronowski, he prayed the prayer of Oliver Cromwell, a man of no uncertain opinions himself, and the prayer was this, “I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible that you might be mistaken.”

I think now that I lost my innocence at that moment. I lost my happy naivete watching television, as an old man knelt among his ancestors, wrestling with the unavoidability of sin, struggling to understand how human beings -- to whom across the generations Bronowski had assigned such nobility and intelligence, such decency -- how human beings could treat other women and children and men in such a horrific way. Just before PBS slipped back to a pledge-break, it occurred to me that my fellow creatures were capable of evil.
And if they, then most assuredly I too was capable of evil, my education, my Catholicism, a rural code of integrity and hard work aside, I too was capable of doing great wrong for no other reason than that I was absolutely certain it was the right thing to do. Dear Lord, please save us from knowing it all.

There is a diocesan wide novena you are invited to participate in.
Daily Pray the Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Novena
Prayer(Fr. Kapaun Prayer) below. Go to Confession at the beginning of the Novena. Attend Mass as often as possible. Offer your Holy Communions. Fast on Wed. and Fri. Accept and offer up sufferings God sends you. And pray the Father Kapaun prayer: Fr. Emil Kapaun gave glory to God by following his call to the priesthood and thus serving the people of Kansas and those in the military. Fr. Kapaun, I ask your intercession not only for these needs which I mention now:

ACTS RETREAT
Retiro ACTS
The Cathedral and St. Anne's will be offering an ACTS retreat at Camp Tawakoni, near Augusta. Registration and more info can be found on WichitaCathedral.com. What will happen at the retreat? Prayer, spiritual reflection, talks, and discussion.
These are not silent retreats, they are more participative; but we will provide breaks for personal prayer and meditation.
There will also be time for entertainment and getting to know the other people on the retreat. While the retreats are planned around the same format, they all happen a little differently and part of the blessing (and enjoyment) of the retreat is
discovering what it means to you as it happens. For this reason, it is hard to get into specifics. There is prayer, reflection, liturgy and discussion. You can choose to participate in the discussion as much or little as you like.
People are different, so their experiences and reactions to the retreat differ, but if you talk to men and women who have been on the retreat, you will see that responses are typically very positive. The warm, faithful, welcoming environment supports and teaches all of us wherever we are in our faith. We all grow;
and with this, the spiritual life of the parish community grows.
There is something powerfully different in the heartfelt unity among participants at the end of the retreat. If you invest yourself in the retreat, you will have an encounter with the Holy Spirit.

As we continue with the Value Them Both campaign, we want to remind you that Tuesday, July 12 is the last day to register to vote.
Please register to vote before July 12 if you have not done so already.
We need your "YES" vote for the Value Them Both amendment in the August 2 Primary Elections.
Voting "YES" for Value Them Both means putting restrictions on the abortion industry. Here are some of the important points:
*WE ASK that parents be notified and obtain parental consent if a minor requests an abortion.
*PROHIBIT the horrible practice of abortion by dismemberment until the last term of pregnancy.
*PROTECTION against the use of taxpayer funds to fund abortions.

Baptism
Parents:
Must be parishioners of the Cathedral and be registered at least 1 month before baptism.
They must present a copy of the child's birth certificate so that all names are spelled correctly on the baptismal certificate.
Godparents:
They must be married by the Catholic Church and they must present their marriage certificate (a photo is acceptable).
They have to be confirmed and they must present their certificate of confirmation (a photo is acceptable).
Single sponsors:
They must be over 16 years old.
They must present a copy of their confirmation certificate.
Parents who are not parishioners:
If you want your child to be baptized in the Cathedral, parents must present a letter of permission from their parish priest where they are registered, and all the documents mentioned above. (For example, when the godparents are parishioners and the parents come to the Cathedral from another parish to baptize.)
All must present a certificate or letter verifying that they took the baptism class.
Baptism Classes in English:
1st Wednesday of the month at
7:00 p.m. in the Marian Room; located on second floor of the parish office. Registration is required.
Baptisms:
Monthly on 2nd Saturdays at 6:15 p.m. and monthly on 2nd Sundays at 11:15 a.m.
Please call the parish receptionist to register for Baptism class and/or arrange the baptism date at 263-6574.

Congratulations on your future wedding! Please visit our website to request a wedding date (WichitaCathedral.com), or call the parish office at least 9 months prior to the desired date. Our Receptionist, Francesca Chavez, will receive your request and contact you to schedule your date. She will then put you in contact with Fr. Keiter or Fr. Shepherd for marriage preparation.

Quinceañeras
Requirements: Young women must be baptized, have received First Communion, and have been confirmed or are currently in Confirmation Class. All Young women must also take a
Quinceañera class, which begins the second Tuesday of February/September .
Please contact the office at 263-6574 to begin the process of setting a date for the celebration. Thank you.

Quinceañeras
Requisitos: Las jóvenes deben estar bautizadas, haber recibido la Primera Comunión, y haber sido Confirmadas o que estén actualmente en clase de Confirmación. Todas las jóvenes también deben tomar una clase de Quinceañera, que comienza el segundo Martes de Febrero y Septiembre.
