FROM THE PASTOR...

Dear Parishioners,

In 2014, with the decreasing number of Catholic Schools, Bishop DiMarzio aligned every par-ish in the diocese with a nearby Catholic elementary school or academy, so that all pastors of all parishes would be members of those academic corporations (that is, involved in governance) and would also provide a pastoral presence for the enrolled students.

St. Raphael’s was aligned with St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Academy in Greenpoint. It may seem strange that a Queens parish would be aligned with a Brooklyn academy, but St. Stan’s is actually the Catholic school physically closest to St. Raphael’s — it is about one mile away.

As part of my own involvement, I teach third-grade religion class there each week. I have also met with the other members of the corporation, as well as with the lay Board of Members. I must say that is an exceptionally well-run school, which draws students from various parts of Brooklyn and Queens (with a recent infusion of students from the L.I.C. waterfront development). The Princi-pal is outstanding, and the spirit of the academy upbeat and clearly Catholic.

If you visit our parish website (and I hope you do: www.straphael-queens.org), you will find a link to St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy. Please check it out. There is also information about St. Stan’s in this bulletin and on our vestibule bulletin boards. In June, we also plan to have a presenta-tion here (at least at the Spanish Mass) by the Assistant Principal.

If you know of someone interested in pursuing enrollment in a fine Catholic School, I can per-sonally assure you that St. Stan’s fills the bill. Interested persons can phone the school (718-383-1970) to arrange a visit and a tour. Let us adjust to the reality of changing times and do our part to preserve the vision of Catholic education in this new way.

— Father Jerry Jecewiz
