From the Pastor’s Desk
In this weekend’s gospel, a scholar of the law seeks clarification on the second greatest commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” He asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” In response, Jesus tells the remarkable parable of the Good Samaritan.
This particular teaching of Jesus was shocking to a first century Jews. They were at odds with the Samaritans, and it would have been unthinkable for the Jews to consider a Samaritan good. In other words, according to Jesus, the hero of the parable was a person from the enemy camp.
Lessons from the parable of the Good Samaritan can easily be applied to our day and age. Division is a hallmark of our nation, our Church, and our local communities. What is worse, we have lost the art of dialogue and debate. People seem to shout past each other without attempting to understand or appreciate each other’s point of view.
While disagreement is a part of the human experience, disciples of Christ always speak the truth in love. With humility, we strive to show charity and compassion to those who are from the “enemy camp.”
This is the key to overcoming polarization and to achieving meaningful conversation.
“Who is my neighbor?” Only when we answer this question correctly can we work through divisions and begin to build the Kingdom of God. My hope is that you and I have the courage to be the Good Samaritan. As authentic instruments of peace, we are called to do good not only to those who agree with us, but also to those who passionately oppose us or even persecute us. When we treat everyone as our neighbor – that is, with great love – then we can witness the Kingdom of God break forth.

En el evangelio de este fin de semana, un estudioso de la ley busca una aclaración sobre el segundo más grande mandamiento: “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Le pregunta a Jesús: "¿Quién es mi prójimo?" En respuesta, Jesús cuenta la extraordinaria parábola del buen samaritano.
Esta enseñanza de Jesús fue escandalosa para los judíos del primer siglo. Estaban enfrentados a los samaritanos, y habría sido impensable que los judíos consideraran bueno a un samaritano. En otras palabras, según Jesús, el héroe de la parábola era una persona del campo enemigo.

"¿Quién es mi prójimo?" Sólo cuando respondamos correctamente a esta pregunta podremos trabajar para superar las divisiones y empezar a construir el Reino de Dios. Mi esperanza es que ustedes y yo tengamos el valor de ser el buen samaritano. Como auténticos instrumentos de paz, estamos llamados a hacer el bien no sólo a los que están de acuerdo con nosotros, sino también a los que se oponen apasionadamente a nosotros o incluso nos persiguen.
Cuando tratamos a todos como a nuestro prójimo – es decir, con gran amor – podemos ser testigos del Reino de Dios.

Our parishes welcome Father David Arroyo Alonso and Father Victor Mendez Cano! These two new Theatine priests are now in residence at Christ the King and will be serving in the Diocese of Columbus. Please receive Fathers David and Victor warmly, and know that a third Theatine priest, Father Salvador Cisneros Carillo, will arrive early next month.
The parish offices at Christ the King and Saint Thomas will be closed this Monday, July 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We will be participating in a staff meeting.
Vacation Bible School for the children of our communities starts this week. Join us this Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15, as we gather in the gym at Christ the King from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for games and activities. Summer Youth Nights continue! This Wednesday, July 13, Christ the King will host our next Frassati Night at 7:00 p.m. in the church vestibule. Frassati Nights give young people the opportunity to gather for conversation on faith and to develop authentic friendships rooted in God. Then on Friday, July 15, high school youth from our parishes are invited to join us for a night of Adoration, Color War, and Ice Cream Sundaes. All men are invited to gather for our next Men's Prayer Breakfast at Christ the King on Saturday, July 16. Learn more about your vocation at the annual Quo Vadis Retreat where you will spend time with other high schoolers exploring the Lord’s call while having fun.
