Dear Families:
With Ash Wednesday, we began this season of Lent.
Lent means 40 days. During this me, we Chris ans try to prepare for the great celebra on of the Resurrec on of Christ – Easter. Taking as an example the 40 days Jesus fasted in the desert, the Church recommends three things during this me: fas ng/abs nence, prayer and sacrifice.
Fas ng is not limited to the absence or reduc on of food, but rather, it is some mes more radical. It’s giving up our own ways to embrace those of Jesus. The way of Jesus is uncondi onal love to the Father and to others. We must renounce hatred, grudges, enmi es, disunity, revenge, cri cism, envy and all type of offenses against the law of love. We must share what we have, our values, quali es, energies, and our me. Living in an a tude of service, volunteer work, in aid and assistance to others, is a way of conversion to the truths of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospels.
The Church asks us to fast two days, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This does not mean that we can not fast more days if we think we should. However, abs nence is
requested by the Church for all Fridays of Lent. Abs nence means not ea ng meat on Fridays. But it also relates to the corporal sacrifice we must make for personal spiritual control and offering ourselves to God.
Frequent prayer will help us live, more deeply, the mysteries of Redemp on, to get closer to Jesus, thus satura ng our lives with the kindness and mercy of God.
Let us pray more. In addi on, every Friday we have the opportunity of prac cing the Way of the Cross – the medita on of Jesus’ journey to his death and the Exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday.
Sacrifice means to give of oneself to others. When we give alms for the poor and needy, God sees it as if we gave it to God Himself. It is giving the poorest children of God something of yours. It is to share with others. It is showing solidarity with the pain of others. Let us take this me as something very posi ve in our lives on earth that opens us up more to God, in prayer, and to our neighbor, through charity.

Queridas familias:
Con el Miércoles de Ceniza dimos comienzo a este empo de la Cuaresma. La Cuaresma significa 40 días. Los cris anos durante este empo tratamos de prepararnos para la gran celebración de la Pascua de Cristo. Teniendo como ejemplo los 40 días de ayuno de Jesús en el desierto también la Iglesia nos recomienda durante este empo tres cosas: ayuno y abs nencia, oración y sacrificio.
El ayuno no se limita a la ausencia de alimentos o a su reducción, sino que se trata de algo más radical. Es renunciar a los propios caminos para abrazar los de Jesús. El camino de Jesús es el amor incondicional al Padre y a los demás. Hemos de renunciar a los odios, rencores, enemistades, desuniones, venganzas, crí cas, envidias y toda clase de ofensas contra la ley del amor. Hemos de compar r lo que tenemos, nuestros valores, cualidades, energías, nuestro empo. Vivir en una ac tud de servicio, de trabajo voluntario en ayuda y auxilio de los demás es un camino de conversión a las verdades de Jesús escritas en los evangelios.
Dos días nos pide la Iglesia ayunar, el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Esto no quiere decir que no podamos ayunar más días si así pensamos que debemos hacerlo. En cambio, la abs nencia es pedida por la Iglesia para todos los viernes de Cuaresma. La abs nencia significa no comer carne durante los viernes. Pero también significa el sacrificio corporal que yo debo hacer para control personal de mi espíritu y ofrecimiento a Dios de mí mismo.
La oración más frecuente me ayudará a vivir más los misterios de la Redención, a acercarme más a Jesús y a empapar mi vida de la bondad y misericordia de Dios.
Recemos más. Tenemos además la oportunidad cada viernes de ejercitarnos en la prác ca del VIA-CRUCIS (camino de la Cruz), la meditación del camino de Jesús hasta su muerte y la Exposición del San simo Sacramento todos los viernes.
El sacrificio significa dar de mi y de lo mío a los demás. La limosna para los pobres, para los más necesitados, Dios la ve como si se la dieran a El mismo. Es dar a los hijos de Dios más pobres algo de lo mío. Es compar r con los demás. Es ser solidarios con el dolor de los otros.
Entendamos este empo como algo muy posi vo para nuestra vida sobre la erra, que nos abre más a Dios en la oración y al prójimo por medio de la caridad.

Saints Perpetua and Felicity Third Century
Feast Day - March 7th
One of the proofs of a really close friendship is when you can’t say one person’s name without thinking of the other. This shows up in history, with names like Lewis and Clark. It’s in story books, with names like Hansel and Gretel, or Jack and Jill. When it comes to saints, there are many examples, but one of the most prominent duos is Perpetua and Felicity.
Perpetua was a young Chris an noblewoman and Felicity was a young Chris an slave. The two were arrested for their belief in Christ, during the persecu on of Emperor Sep mius Severus: at this me, Perpetua was a new mother, and Felicity was eight months pregnant.
Together, the two women helped each other through the heat, darkness, and brutality of the guards in the prison.
Two days before their scheduled death, Felicity gave birth to her daughter in the prison, and the child was adopted by a Chris an woman. Perpetua and Felicity were sent out to face the arena together, and a er being exposed to the beasts, were killed by having their throats cut. These last days of the women were recorded by Perpetua, whose diary became one of the most famous accounts in the early Church of the suffering of the martyrs.
Campaign Components
One of the strengths of 40 Days for Life is its simplicity. The campaign is made up of three key components:
• Prayer and fas ng: invi ng people of faith throughout our city and across the country to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fas ng for an end to abor on.
• Peaceful Vigil: standing for life through a 40-day peaceful public witness outside the local Planned Parenthood at 736 Central Ave, Sarasota.
• Community Outreach: taking a posi ve, upbeat pro-life message to every corner of our city through media efforts, church and school outreach, pe on drives, and public visibility.

7 REGULATIONS ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE
Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday (April 15th) by all Catholics between the ages of 18 years and 59 years (inclusive). On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older on all Fridays of Lent, including Good Friday.
Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
NORMAS SOBRE EL AYUNO Y LA ABSTINENCIA El ayuno es observado el Viernes Santo (15 de abril) por católicos entre las edades de 18 a 59 años de edad. En un día de ayuno, una comida completa es permitida. Dos comidas pequeñas, son permitidas para mantenerse, pero juntas no deben ser una comida completa. Comer entre comidas no es permitido, pero los líquidos son permitidos. Si es posible, el ayuno debe continuar hasta la vigilia de la Pascua para honrar el sufrimiento y la muerte de nuestro Señor Jesus y para prepararnos a compartir más y estar preparados a la celebración de Su resurección.

Divine Mercy Presentation- St. Patrick Parish, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, is hosting “Divine Mercy and The Eucharist”
with guest speaker Dr. Bryan Thatcher from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 19.
Thatcher is founder of The Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy (EADM), now part of the Order of Congregation of Marians of the Immaculate Conception.
The day begins with an optional 8:00 a.m.
Mass, followed by a light breakfast, presentation and lunch. Cost $10.00 per person. Registration will be available on the Church of St Patrick website at
