Dear Families:
Some mes we can tell where a person is from and/or even their family’s origin, simply by their manner of speech, a re, and/or their expressions. Of these hallmarks, the person is o en not conscious. That is just the way it is. Today, Jesus explains how to recognize His friends. He says that by the love they have for each other. "See how they love each other", was some mes said of the early Chris ans. This no on may sound roman c and sugar-coated. We talk a lot about love, and it all sounds cute and very pre y, but if we ask anyone what is most important in life, they will quickly answer that it is love. Love, however, is not just a nice and cozy feeling, as some might think. Some mes love is difficult, hard, and complicated. It some mes manifests, not so much as a good feeling, but as our endeavor to wish others well. Wishing well to others does not necessarily mean liking them, or always being in perfect harmony with them. Our tastes or personali es are not always in sync with those we love. Some mes love requires a lot of sacrifice, pa ence, and tolerance.
The love that Jesus asks of us is not a sen mental and sweet kind of love: it is stronger than death; it is service to the point of giving one’s own life (as in the washing of the feet and the Passion of Jesus). It is stronger than hatred, because it seeks good, even for our enemies.
The love required of us is like the love that God has for us – uncondi onal - which is not to say that everything we are and do is to His liking. Rather, God does not withdraw His love even when we do not behave as we should. That is the same kind of love He expects us to show one another. We do not wait for people to be good, nice, friendly, and easy to live with. Rather, we are called upon to love them - seek their good - despite, not because of what they do. This is how we will be recognized as followers of Christ. Otherwise, we would be just like any person who does things out of pleasure and self-
gra fica on.
May God bless you.

Hechos 14:21-27; Apo 21:1-5a; Juan 13:31-33a, 34-35 Salmo 145 [144]
Queridas familias:

St. Christopher Magallanes
Feast Day - May 21
“Long live Christ the King and the Virgin of Guadalupe!”
This was the slogan of the “Cristero” uprising in the 1920’s against the an -Catholic government of Mexico which had ins tuted and enforced laws against the Church in an absurd a empt to
eradicate the Catholic faith in Mexico, even going so far as to ban all foreign clergy and the celebra on of Mass in some regions.
St. Christopher Magallanes, along with 21 other priests and three lay companions, were martyred between 1915 and 1937, by shoo ng or hanging, throughout eight Mexican states, for their
membership in the Cristero movement. Magallanes erected a seminary in Tota che and he and his companions secretly preached and ministered to the faithful.
The last words heard spoken by Magallanes were from his cell, when he shouted, "I am innocent and I die innocent. I forgive with all my heart those responsible for my death, and I ask God that the shedding of my blood serve the peace of our divided Mexico".
Pope John Paul II bea fied the Cristero martyrs in 1992 and canonized them in 2000.
