Dear Families:
As a celebra on of the resurrec on of Jesus, Easter brings us a sense of euphoria and well-being. However, we must remember that Chris anity is essen ally a balance. This Sunday will remind us that being a Chris an has its moments of joy, but also mes of sadness and pain.
The first reading refers to the persecu on of the apostles in the early church. A er Jewish authori es had them flogged, ordering them to stop speaking in the name of Jesus, the apostles le the Sanhedrin, “...rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name...” (Acts 5:40-41)..
In today's Gospel, Jesus reveals himself to Peter, at the Sea of Tiberias, and then tells him of his impending violent
demise: "When you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this to signify the means by which Peter would die, and thereby glorify God. (Jn 21:18-19).
The cateche cal instruc on for this Third Sunday of Easter is that the future glory that awaits us, for being incorporated with the risen Christ, does not exempt us - rather requires us - to struggle and suffer, here on earth. To partake in the
resurrec on and glorifica on of Christ, we first have to partake in his crucifixion. As St. Paul teaches us: "All who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted" (2 Tim 3:12).
Some mes, because the world disagrees with us, and other mes because we have to disagree with the world, the world takes advantage of the failures of Church members to shake and discredit her, thus, causing much grief to men and women of good will who love the Church and, who by loving the Church, love Christ. O en, we must speak up as firmly as the apostles did before the Sanhedrin: "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29).
Do not be afraid. "He has made his dwelling among us..." (John 1:14), and with us: "I am with you always, un l the end of the ages" (Mt 28:20). He is always present in his Church and in each and every one of us, when we receive him sacramentally in the Eucharist (Communion). Let us say it with faith as did the disciples of Emmaus: "... stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over...So he went in to stay with them...".
(Luke 24:1-35)
May Jesus dwell in your hearts and in your families.
