Dear Parishioners of St. Matthew,
Since 2009 I have had the blessing and the joy of being your cantor and music director. During these wonderful 8 years I have grown as a person and I have found in you so many beautiful and meaningful relationships that will be with me for the rest of my life. As you know, my professional career as opera singer has also gained strength. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Music at FAU last month and now I have been accepted into the Vocal Master’s program at the Univer-sity of North Carolina in Greensboro. This is a tremendous opportunity for me to gain the education and performance experience required to succeed in an academic field. That has been my professional goal for many years. Charles and I will be relocating to Greensboro, NC on August 1st. I’m certain that you will welcome the new cantor and give him/her the support you have given me.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you have giv-en me throughout these past 8 years. Please know that St. Matthew Catholic Church will always be my spiritual home and that you will be in my heart and my prayers always.
With much love and appreciation,
Dora

Dora

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” - MATTHEW 11:30
When we think of our call to be good stewards, and His request to generously share our me, talent
and treasure, we may consider that God is asking too much of us. However, we need to remind
our-selves that we are not “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gi s God has given
us. All He is asking is that we share with Him a small por on of what He has already given to us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most be-loved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this tell-ing remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprin-kling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who were-n’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath.
