From the Pastor’s Desk
This weekend we are celebrating First Communion at both Christ the King and Saint Thomas. It is a thrill to see young people receive the Body of Christ for the first time. They are captivated by this mystery which is so central to our religion. Then on Wednesday, many of our young adults will receive the sacrament of Confirmation. These parishioners will be filled with the Holy Spirit in a powerful way and will be equipped to live as committed disciples of Christ. These annual sacramental celebrations remind all of us 1.) to approach the Blessed Sacrament with a sense of wonder and awe each Sunday, and 2.) to appreciate deeply our relationship with the Holy Spirit. It is an incredible blessing to receive the Body of Christ and to have friendship with the Holy Spirit. Let us remain very conscientious of our love for the Blessed Sacrament, and may our openness to the Holy Spirit continue to grow throughout our lives.
Throughout the Diocese of Columbus, parishes have begun launching the 2022 Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA). I am grateful for everyone at Christ the King and Saint Thomas who has contributed to the BAA in the past. Your generosity to the Diocese of Columbus is very much appreciated. If you have not previously supported the Diocese of Columbus through the BAA – well, now you have the opportunity to do so! Our participation in the BAA is critical to the efforts of the broader Church. Just as our parishes depend on the financial support from our weekly collection, the Diocese of Columbus depends on the financial support it receives from this annual appeal. Please discern in prayer as to how you can give generously to the 2022 BAA.
Let me end by reminding you that this weekend we are entering into the month of May. In the Church, we use this month to deepen our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I would like to encourage you to consider ways in which you can express your love for the Mother of God. Here are some ideas: pray the rosary on a daily basis, display and reverence an image of Mary in your home, make a pilgrimage to a Marian church (e.g., Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio), take flowers to Mary at Christ the King or Saint Thomas. Our communities will do more to show our devotion to Mary on Mother’s Day (next Sunday!). The more we love Mary, the more we love Jesus. And the more we love Jesus, the more we love one another.

Este fin de semana celebramos la Primera Comunión tanto en Cristo Rey como en Santo Tomás. Es emocionante ver a los jóvenes recibir el Cuerpo de Cristo por primera vez. Están cautivados por este misterio que es tan central en nuestra religión. Luego, el miércoles, muchos de nuestros jóvenes adultos recibirán el sacramento de la Confirmación. Estos feligreses serán llenados con el Espíritu Santo de una manera poderosa y serán equipados para vivir como discípulos comprometidos de Cristo. Estas celebraciones sacramentales anuales nos recuerdan a todos 1.) acercarnos al Santísimo Sacramento con un sentido de asombro y admiración cada domingo, y 2.) apreciar profundamente nuestra relación con el Espíritu Santo. We are excited to launch our new website for the parishes of Christ the King and St. Thomas the Apostle! Because of the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation, we will not have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament or confessions at Christ the King this Wednesday, May 4.
Typically, there is Adoration from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and confession from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. That schedule will resume next Wednesday, May 11.
All-Night Adoration is this Friday, May 6! We will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. at Christ the King. This month is reserved for the men of the parish. (This event is in Spanish.)
In today’s Gospel, we find the disciples on an all-night fishing journey. Jesus had revealed Himself to them after His resurrection, but perhaps it felt easier to return to something old and comfortable.
They were unsuccessful at catching any fish until a stranger instructed them to cast the nets on the other side of the boat. John exclaimed, “It is the Lord!”, and the nets were filled with fish. Jesus may go unrecognized in our daily lives, but He is present in every person we meet. He continues to bless his disciples with an abundance of gifts. Please consider sharing your blessings by supporting our St Vincent de Paul collection at Christ the King next weekend. Our ministry lifts up Jesus, who comes to us in the individuals and families asking for assistance. The recent BREAD BOX series in the bulletin has outlined the seven themes of Catholic social teaching. Our justice ministry’s collaboration with BREAD gives us the opportunity to put the Church’s teaching into practice. BREAD continues to work for affordable housing, greater trust between law enforcement and the community, equal access to benefits in our city, and protection for our environment. These social justice issues will be discussed and addressed at the Nehemiah Action meeting next Tuesday. This once-a-year event gathers thousands of residents of Franklin County who worship in various congregations. With one voice, they propose to community leaders common sense solutions to problems in our city. We will meet on Tuesday, May 10, at 6:40 p.m. at the Celeste Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds (717 E. 17th Ave.). (This event is in English with Spanish translation available.)
