FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners,
In the last quarter of the twentieth century, Father Raymond Brown was one of the most fa-mous Scripture scholars the United States ever produced.
At a course of his that I once attended at Union Theological in Manhattan, he referenced the debate folks sometimes had over which was the more important Christian holiday: Christmas or Easter.
Father Brown said he hoped one day preachers would announce on Pentecost that the cor-rect answer is neither. The most important Christian holiday, he said, was Pentecost. Without Pente-cost, there would be no Church to witness to the saving work of Jesus throughout the ages. Without the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out on Pentecost, Jesus Christ would be but an historical memory from long ago and far away. There’s much to reflect on in this observation.
This Pentecost weekend is a busy one in our parish. No need here to overdose on the Win-dsor Castle nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, since we have two weddings of our own on site Saturday.
On Sunday, we have First Communions at two Masses: English at 11 am, and Spanish at 12:30 pm.
Also, on Sunday, at the Spanish Mass, we will celebrate the Confirmation of 13 teenagers and adults. This is an indult (special permission) given to the pastor of a parish on the Solemnity of Pentecost.
It’s interesting this year that we have more Pentecost Confirmations in the parish than we had with the Bishop’s Confirmation recently. A first Confirmation photo appears elsewhere in this bulletin. We’ll follow this with more, as well as First Communion pix.
Congratulations to all marking sacramental moments in their life this weekend! Onward in your journey of faith!
-Fr. Jerry Jecewiz
