The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. The word of the Lord

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.
He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

La Tercera Encíclica del
Papa Francisco
Con eco en las enseñanzas de los papas anteriores y del Concilio Vaticano II, el Papa Francisco nos invita a un lugar de reflexión y oración, considerando nuestra misión como discípulos en la construcción de la fraternidad, una nueva red de amistades sociales y trabajando para contribuir a el bien común.
Los discípulos y la iglesia deben ser más que oración, deben ser acción en la vida pública, en la política. El Papa Francisco, deja claro que no estamos hablando de política de partidos, sino de implicación en la vida pública que promueve la fraternidad, la solidaridad, la cultura del encuentro y la construcción de la sociedad enraizada en el Reino. Si bien, la Iglesia respeta la autonomía de la política, no relega su propia misión al ámbito de lo privado. Al contrario, no «puede ni debe quedarse al margen» en la construcción de un mundo mejor, ni dejar de
«despertar las fuerzas espirituales» que fecundan toda la vida en sociedad. Es verdad que los ministros religiosos no deben hacer política partidaria, propia de los laicos, pero ni siquiera ellos pueden renunciar a la dimensión política de la existencia que implica una constante atención al bien común y la preocupación por el desarrollo humano integral. La Iglesia «tiene un papel público que no se agota en sus actividades de asistencia y educación» sino que procura «la promoción del hombre y la fraternidad universal». Y como María, la Madre de Jesús, «queremos ser una Iglesia que sirve, que sale de casa, que sale de sus templos, que sale de sus sacristías, para acompañar la vida, sostener la esperanza, ser signo de unidad […] para tender puentes, romper muros, sembrar reconciliación».(FT, #276)

The Third Encyclical of
Pope Francis
With echoes from his previous teachings, of past popes, and the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis invites us into a reflective and prayerful place, considering our mission as disciples in building up fraternity, a new network of social friendships, and working to contribute to the common good. Disciples and the church must be
more than prayer, but action as well in public life, in politics. He makes clear that we are not talking about party politics, but rather involvement in public life that promotes fraternity, solidarity, a culture of encounter, and building up of society rooted in the Kingdom.
“…..the Church, while respecting the autonomy of political life, does not restrict her mission to the private sphere. On the contrary, “she cannot and must not remain on the sidelines” in the building of a better world, or fail to “reawaken the spiritual energy” that can contribute to the betterment of society. It is true that religious ministers must not engage in the party politics that
are the proper domain of the laity, but neither can they renounce the political dimension of life itself, which involves a constant attention to the common good and a concern for integral human development. The Church “has a public role over and above her charitable and educational activities”. She works for “the advancement of humanity and of universal fraternity”... And in imitation of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, “we want to be a Church that serves, that leaves home and goes forth from its places of worship, goes forth from its sacristies, in order to accompany life, to sustain hope, to be the sign of unity… to build bridges, to break down walls, to sow seeds of reconciliation”. Lectura del Libro del Profeta Jonás.
En aquellos días, el Señor volvió a hablar a Jonás y le dijo: “Levántate y vete a Nínive, la gran capital, para anunciar ahí el mensaje que te voy a indicar”. Se levantó Jonás y se fue a Nínive, como le había mandado el Señor. Nínive era una ciudad enorme: hacían falta tres días para recorrerla. Jonás caminó por la ciudad durante un día, pregonando: “Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida”.
Los ninivitas creyeron en Dios, ordenaron un ayuno y se vistieron de sayal, grandes y pequeños.
Cuando Dios vio sus obras y cómo se convertían de su mala vida, cambió de parecer y no les mandó el castigo que había determinado imponerles.

Hermanos: Les quiero decir una cosa: la vida es corta. Por tanto, conviene que los casados vivan como si no lo estuvieran; los que sufren, como si no sufrieran; los que están alegres, como si no se alegraran; los que compran, como si no compraran; los que disfrutan del mundo, como si no disfrutaran de él; porque este mundo que vemos es pasajero.

Lectura del Santo Evangelio según San Marcos.
Después de que arrestaron a Juan el Bautista, Jesús se fue a Galilea para predicar el Evangelio de Dios y decía:
“Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evangelio”. Caminaba Jesús por la orilla del lago de Galilea, cuando vio a Simón y a su hermano, Andrés, echando las redes en el lago, pues eran pescadores. Jesús les dijo: “Síganme y haré de ustedes pescadores de hombres”. Inmediatamente dejaron las redes y lo siguieron. Un poco más adelante, vio a Santiago y a Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que estaban en una barca, remendando sus redes. Los llamó, y ellos, dejando en la barca a su padre con los trabajadores, se fueron con Jesús.

Missionary Option -
Must you be called as a missionary and go, for instance, to Africa, in order to respond to the Gospel? Or could you be called to bring the Good News whether
you are fisherman, woman, or theologian—in whatever you do, wherever you are? Which way does Jesus call you?
According to Pope Francis’s statement below, do you have to be perfect in order to be called? Is the Lord with you when you make mistakes? How does he show his eternal love?
“It seems in this passage that Simon, Andrew, James and John are chosen once-and-for-all: and yes, they were chosen! At this moment in the story, however, they had not been faithful to the last. After being chosen, they went on to make mistakes...When things are not going well, he (the Lord) gets himself involved in history, he sorts the situation, and goes forward with us. … When the Lord tells us: “with eternal love, I have loved you,” he is referring to this. The Lord has been thinking of us for many generations —of each and every one of us.”

¿Si eres llamado como misionero deberías ir, por ejemplo, a África, para responder al Evangelio? ¿O podrías ser llamado a traer las Buenas Nuevas, ya seas pescador, mujer o teólogo, en
cualquier cosa que hagas, donde quiera que estés? ¿De qué manera te llama Jesús?
Según la declaración del Papa Francisco (ver abajo), ¿tienes que ser perfecto para ser llamado? ¿Está el Señor contigo cuando cometes errores? ¿Cómo muestra su amor eterno?
“Parece en este pasaje que Simón, Andrés, Santiago y Juan son elegidos de una vez por todas: ¡y sí, fueron elegidos! En este momento de la historia, sin embargo, no habían sido fieles hasta lo último. Después de ser elegidos, cometieron errores....Cuando las cosas no van bien, él (el Señor) se mete en la historia, ordena la situación y sigue adelante con nosotros... Cuando el Señor nos dice: “con amor eterno, te he amado”, se está refiriendo a esto. El Señor ha estado pensando en nosotros durante muchas generaciones, en todos y cada uno de nosotros ”.
