GOSPEL MEDITATION August 26, 2018 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

"

T

his saying is hard; who can accept it?"

The words of Jesus' disciples in today's Gospel must sound familiar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus' words in the Bread of Life Discourse.

Not all of them, however, had the same reaction.

When the disciples question Jesus' teaching, he confirms its truth. "The words

I have spoken to you are spirit and life." For some, Jesus' reassurance was not enough.

These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The

mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. "Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." For them, their doubt proves too much.

Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them.

In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith.

The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding?

Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt?

MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGELIO 26 de agosto de 2018

21er Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

L

(Juan 6:67). Pedro responde en plural en

representación de todos. "Señor, ¿a quién iríamos? Tú tienes palabras de vida

eterna.

Deacon Auld is offering “A Simple Way to Better Your Life” to the men’s group on Wednesdays at 7 PM in Santa Maria del Popolo’s school building, beginning September 5. It is from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It helps a person recognize and respond to Christ’s presence in the middle of ordinary, everyday life.

This program acts as a guide for reflection and prayer as one makes a daily, particular, life response to Christ. It is a 10 week program consisting of weekly group meetings of men for about an hour with materials for daily prayer and reflection.

To Open Hearts to God

Today’s Readings Responsorial Psalm: (Ps34) Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Gospel: Jn 6:56-57

The Bread of Life Discourse reaches its zenith in Jesus saying,

"Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you."

How is this assertion central to our Catholic belief in the Eucharist?

Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD

Catholic quote

Of all his virtues, Christ

specifically commends one to us, humility. 'Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart.' --St. Bernard of Clairvaux

Evangelio:-- Jn 6, 56-57

The next proposed project will be to install air conditioning in the Church.

The two sources of income for this project are the pledges from To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign and the profit from Football Mania. We need each parish family to PLEASE purchase or sell 2 or more football mania tickets. The air conditioning project won't be done until the funds have been collected. The parish is still open to receive new pledges from those parishioners who still wish to contribute to support the above project. If you want to make your pledge, please take a pledge card in the kiosks located in the back of the church or in the lobby of the Chapel, or contact the parish office.
