Are you more like the Pharisee or more like the tax collector?
What was the Pharisee like? He was a very devout person. He was fasting, he was tithing, and he was following the commandments. What was the Tax Collector like? He was a very sinful person. He worked for the occupying Romans. He extorted mon-ey from his own people. But it was the Pharisee who was not righteous with God. And it was the Tax Col-lector who was righteous with God. Does that make any sense? Don’t actions speak louder than words? But don’t judge a book by its cover. It’s all about what is on the inside. On the outside, the Pharisee was de-vout. But on the inside, he became self-centered. He became self-righteous. He said to himself, “O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity— greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector.” He considered himself more righteous than others. He didn’t need God’s forgiveness and mercy. In contrast, the Tax Collector, knew he is a sinner. He knew everyone hated him. But he said to God, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.”
Why is that important? Because the Tax Collector became humble. He opened his heart to receive Gods’ forgiveness and mercy. He allowed God to change him. And when we do the same thing…when we go to confession and we allow God to change us with His mercy, we become more compassionate, we become more forgiving, and we become more merci-ful to others.
But this parable is also a warning. Both of these atti-tudes—self-righteousness and humility—are inside of us. We live with a constant temptation to think of our-selves as more righteous than others. It is so easy for the love of God to become idolatry—the love of self. It is so easy to start to see God’s gifts to us as our re-wards. It is so easy even for our prayers to become a form of boasting. Where does that comes from? The sin of pride. Pride means we are trying to be equal with God.
But there is a cure. Remember last week we learned that our prayer has to be more than just words? We have to live our prayer in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Now we learn that living in the Spirit of Jesus Christ means we have to be humble. Just like Jesus, who at the last supper got down on his knees, and washed the disciples’ feet. We have to live our prayer in that spirit—of humble service to anyone in need. Why is being humble so important? Because being humble conquers pride. Today Jesus is calling us to do that. By living our prayer in the humble Spirit of Jesus Christ we can defeat the temptation of pride and self-righteousness.
