Christ said in the gospel today, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength…and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is a beautiful teaching. Jesus just showed us that there are three big commandments that are linked together: love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self. These necessarily must go together. Love of God cannot exist apart from a love of neighbor, and love of self makes no sense without love of God. If someone claims to love God, that love can be verified by the way they treat their neighbor.
The questions we might ask ourselves are these; Who is our neighbor? How do I love God? How do I love my neighbor? How do I love myself? Can I love God, and still hate my neighbor?
One great example we have in the Church is St. Martin of Tours. St. Martin was a Roman officer in the 4th century who had just begun receiving instruction in the faith as a catechumen. On one cold winter day, he was returning to the city gates with his patrol on horseback, and he saw a poor beggar. The man was dressed in rags and literally had nothing. St. Martin stared at him for a moment, then dismounted, took off his military cloak, drew his sword, and cut the cloak in half. With a smile, he gave half his cloak to the beggar, and rode into the city, thinking nothing of it. But that evening, he received a dream of Christ appearing to him, surrounded by the angels and seated on his glorious throne in heaven – but he was wearing the half- cloak that Martin had given to the man. St. Martin realized at that moment that Christ was present to him in that poor man. He learned that love for God and love for neighbor are two sides of the same coin and can never be separated.
My beloved friends I am not telling you to cut your sweaters or jackets in half this morning, but we can care for our neighbors in other ways. We can give service or money to the poor. We can offer support to a family who is suffering especially now that thanksgiving and Christmas are coming. We can say a kind word to a coworker who is visibly having a rough day.
Also this call of Christ to love our neighbor demands that we do all we can to protect the rights and dignity of all, especially our neighbors who are poor and vulnerable. Like the unborn child in the womb, the poor parents struggling to find work to help their family, the elderly people who find themselves in a nursing facility, the immigrant who struggles to feed their family, the veteran suffering the mental and physical effects of war. These are some of the pressing issues that affect our neighbors.
Dear friends now is the time for us to show why we are Christians. I therefore challenge you today to let your love of God inform your love of neighbor this month. Let us now pray that we might have the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to recognizing who our neighbors are, and how we are to serve them. This we asked through Christ our Lord, amen.

Cristo dijo en el evangelio de hoy: "amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente, y con todas tus fuerzas... y amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo".
Una hermosa enseñanza. Jesús nos mostró que hay tres grandes mandamientos que están unidos: el amor de Dios, el amor al prójimo y el amor a uno mismo. Estos necesariamente deben ir juntos. El amor de Dios no puede existir aparte del amor al prójimo, y el amor a uno mismo no tiene sentido sin el amor de Dios. Si alguien dice que ama a Dios, ese amor pue- de ser verificado por la forma en que el trata a su prójimo.
Las preguntas que podríamos hacernos son estas; ¿Quién es nuestro prójimo? ¿Cómo amo a Dios? ¿Cómo amo a mi prójimo? ¿Cómo me amo? ¿Puedo amar a Dios y seguir odiando a mi prójimo?
Un gran ejemplo que tenemos en la Iglesia es San Martín de Tours. San Martín era un oficial romano en el siglo cuatro que acababa de comenzar a recibir instrucción sobre la fe como catecúmeno. En un frío día de invierno, regresaba a las puertas de la ciudad con su patrulla a caballo, y vio a un pobre mendigo. El hombre estaba vestido con harapos y literalmente no tenía nada. San Martín lo miró por un momento, luego desmontó, se quitó la capa militar, sacó su espada y cortó la capa por la mitad. Con una sonrisa, le dio la mitad de su manto al mendigo, y se dirigió a la ciudad sin pensar en ello. Pero esa noche, recibió en sueño que Cristo se le aparecia, rodeado por los ángeles y sentado en su glorioso trono en el cielo, pero que llevaba la media capa que Martin le había dado al hombre. San Martín se dio cuenta en ese momento de que Cristo estaba presente para él en ese pobre hombre. Aprendió que el amor por Dios y el amor al prójimo son dos caras de la misma moneda y que nunca se pueden separar.
Mis queridos amigos, no les estoy diciendo que corten la mitad de sus suéteres o chaquetas esta mañana, pero podemos cuidar de nuestros vecinos de otras maneras.
Podemos dar servicio o dinero a los pobres. Podemos ofrecer apoyo a una familia que sufre, especialmente ahora que se acerca la acción de gracias y la Navidad. Podemos decir una palabra amable a un compañero de trabajo que está visiblemente teniendo un día difícil.
También este llamado de Cristo a amar a nuestro prójimo exige que hagamos todo lo posible para proteger los derechos y la dignidad de todos, especialmente de nuestros vecinos que son pobres y vulnerables. Como el niño no nacido en el útero, los padres pobres que luchan por encontrar trabajo para ayudar a su familia, las personas mayores que se encuentran en un centro de enfermería, el inmigrante que lucha por alimentar a su familia, el veterano que sufre los efectos físicos y mentales de la guerra. . Estos son algunas de las asuntos apremiantes que afectan a nuestros vecinos.
Queridos amigos, ahora es el momento de mostrar por qué somos cristianos. Por lo tanto, les desafío hoy a dejar que su amor de Dios informe de su amor al prójimo este mes.

Faithful Disciples Building God’s Kingdom Thank you to all parishioners who have completed and submitted your Commitment Card to the church.
For those parishioners who have not yet had the opportunity to submit their card, a letter will be mailed to you with a personalized Commitment Card.
It is important that all parishioners complete a Commitment Card as we will be mailing out a Summary Report of the program and need all commitments accounted for in this report. If you have any questions, please contact the church office. We also encourage all parishioners to consider our electronic giving method and to setup your reoccurring offertory gifts electronically .
