This includes Vocations (studies & housing), Ministerial training, Ministry in the jails, Social Ministries, Chancery opera- tional expenses, Youth programs and the Office for the protection of the Vulnerable. Contributions that surpass the parish goal of $135,500 are rebated to our parish directly. We have attained $122,312 in pledges thus far from 244 donors. It is not too late to commit to a pledge. The pledge can be fulfilled in the course of the year. Thank you.

S

aint of the Week

Saint Bernardine of Siena

September 8, 1380 – May 20, 1444

Compared with Saint Paul by the pope, Bernardine had a keen intuition of the needs of the time, along with solid ho- liness and boundless energy and joy. He accomplished all this despite having a very weak and hoarse voice, miracu- lously improved later because of his devo-

tion to Mary. When he was 20, the plague was at its height in his hometown of Siena.

Sometimes as many as 20 people died in one day at the hospital. Bernardine offered to run the hospital and, with the help of other young men, nursed patients there for four months. He escaped the plague, but was so exhausted that a fever confined him for several months. He spent another year caring for a beloved aunt whose parents had died when he was a child, and at her death began to fast and pray to know God’s will for him. At 22, he entered the Franciscan Order and was ordained two years later. For almost a dozen years he

lived in solitude and prayer, but his gifts ultimately caused him to be sent to preach. He always traveled on foot, some- times speaking for hours in one place, then doing the same in another town. Especially known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Bernardine devised a symbol—IHS, the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek—in Gothic letters on a blazing sun. The devotion spread, and the symbol began to appear in churches, homes and public buildings. Opposition arose from those who thought it a dangerous innovation. Three attempts were made to have the pope take action against him, but Bernardine’s holiness, orthodoxy, and intelligence were evidence of his faithful- ness. General of the Friars of the Strict Observance, a branch of the Franciscan Order, Bernardine strongly empha- sized scholarship and further study of theology and canon law. When he started there were 300 friars in the communi- ty; when he died there were 4,000. He returned to preaching the last two years of his life, dying while traveling.

S

RETAIN SPIRIT WEEK

The season of Easter concludes with today’s celebration, the feast of Pente- cost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks the beginning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, today’s first reading. The account in to- day’s Gospel, John 20:19-23, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Yet the event in John’s Gospel takes place on Easter Sunday.

There is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts.

It is to we know that after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an Advocate, who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world.

In the context of the feast of Pentecost, John 20:19-23 reminds us about the integral connection between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to contin- ue the work that he has begun: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and sends them to continue his work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’

act of breathing the Holy Spirit upon the apostles mir- rors God’s act of breathing life into Adam. In fact, both the Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also be translated as “breath.” This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. The reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the Church’s sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God through the for- giveness of sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among peo- ple.
