“Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you, whoever is angry with brother will be liable to judgment.
"You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
"Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all.
Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,'and your 'No' mean 'No.' Anything more is from the evil one.”
Matthew 5:17-37
Reflection
Have you considered that laws are made with love? Do you accept God’s love through his laws?
In your own words, describe what the spirit of God’s law is.
Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph
L L A M A D O A N U A L D I O C E S A N O
February 12, 2017
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish:
St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica is a visible reminder of the Catholic Church’s prominence in the City of San Jose and throughout Santa Clara County. The church’s importance in Santa Clara County is more profound however than physical structures. The ministries and services we provide to the people of our diocese express our true stature and articulate our mission – to respond to human needs in light of the Gospel. This is how we proclaim God’s love.
The Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) enables the Diocese of San Jose to respond to needs of people who are often far from view, to educate men and women for ministry, and to support the essential offices of our diocese. The funds raised through this annual appeal support ministry to the sick, incarcerated persons, and outreach to Catholic students at San Jose State University. This appeal is essential to fund the education of seminarians, deacon candidates, and students in the Institute for Leadership in Ministry (ILM). Additionally, the costs of the Bishop’s Office and other essential diocesan offices are offset through this campaign. The par- ish also benefits directly. We receive $150,000 annually to offset our costs as the Cathedral parish and 20% of my salary is subsidized for my work in the diocese.
I greatly appreciate the support this parish has provided in previous appeals. Last year we exceeded our goal.
All funds raised in excess of our goal are returned to the parish. This helped us meet our financial obligations.
Our parish goal this year remains at $133,000. We can meet this financial goal through 100% participation in this campaign. I am asking you to support this year’s Annual Diocesan Appeal, “Proclaiming God’s Love, Together in Christ.” Please prayerfully consider making a pledge to this important effort.
Sincerely,
Fr. Joseph M. Benedict Pastor
Proclaiming God’s Love, Together in Christ
