From the Office of Social Ministry Please welcome our Jesuit Volunteer Brayden Weninger. She will be working in the Cathedral’s Office of Social Ministry Monday –Friday, navigating the homeless in attaining a mailing address on our site in order to secure employment, shelter, perma- nent housing, free health care, and a multi- tude of other social services leading to sta- bility. She will also be working at the pro- bation re-entry center on Mission Street in partnership with our Bridges of Hope faith- based ministry Friday mornings assisting those immediately released from jail. Bray- den’s hometown is Sacramento. Having attended Jesuit Catholic Schools her whole life, she recently graduated from Regis Uni- versity in Denver, CO with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and double minors in Religious Studies and Peace and Justice.

Brayden has spent semesters abroad in Ita- ly, El Salvador and Guatemala. In her sen- ior year she volunteered at The Gathering Place serving 250-400 impoverished urban poor and homeless individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. During college Brayden involved herself in campus life, student government, worked in the Office of Stu- dent Activities serving as a leadership in- tern & in the Office of Residence Life where she was a peer minister. She was a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Communica- tions Honors Society, graduating with a 3.9 GPA. Let’s give a warm welcome to Bray- den and hopefully join her in volunteering in our Office of Social Ministry this year.

As we approach this Fall’s General Election, I know that many of you – like myself – are in the process of discern- ing the choices before us in the presidential race, as well as in many of the other races and issues that will be decided November 8. I am writing to you today to put forward principles for your consideration in arriving at decisions that are consistent with Catholic teaching.

1.

Every citizen who is eligible to vote must do so. It is a sacred trust, a grave responsibility. In casting a ballot, each person becomes a participant in our democratic process. Voting is a moral act, it expresses our values, our faith, and our hopes for our nation and world.

2.

Be informed. Read and study the many issues and candidates that will appear on your ballot. There are no simple answers to the challenges that face our nation and our world. The United States is integrated into the society of nations and cannot act unilaterally. The good of the whole world and the welfare of people most at risk – the “common good”

– must always be considered in the policies that govern the actions of our nation.

3.

There are key moral and social issues that need to be considered in casting one’s vote. The teaching of Pope Francis is clear that there are a number of concerns that must be included in moral decision-making. Among these are abortion, poverty, capital punishment, care for the environment, assisted suicide, and immigration.

4.

There is no “perfect” candidate. There is no “Catholic” candidate. No candidate’s position on the issues lines up consistently with the teaching of the Church. San Diego Bishop Robert W. McElroy notes the inherent complexity in casting a ballot: “Voting for candidates is a complex moral action in which the voter must confront an entire array of competing candidates’ positions in a single act of voting. It is crucial that in voting for a candidate who supports the advancement of an intrinsic evil, Catholic voters not have the intention of supporting that specific evil, since such an intention would involve them directly in the evil itself. But voters will often find themselves in situations where one candidate supports an intrinsically evil position, yet the alternative realistic candidates all support even graver evils in the totality of their positions.”

5.

The Church may become directly involved in encouraging parishioners to vote one way or another on issues of moral import. This would include, for example, our support of Proposition 62, which would eliminate the death penal- ty, and our opposition to Proposition 66, which would expedite the implementation of the death penalty.

6.

Every Catholic citizen has the responsibility to form their conscience by considering the complexity of the issues, the teaching of the Church, and their own relationship with the Lord. We are bound to vote according to our con- science. As Pope Francis stated in The Joy of Love, it is the role of the pastors to help form consciences, not to replace them.

In closing, I entrust you all to the Lord, that you may be enlightened by the indwelling Holy Spirit and that you may participate as responsible citizens in casting your ballot on November 8. As you do so, please know that you are all in my prayers.

the 2016 Elections

INDULGENCES Receiving God’s mercy in a Jubilee Year. God’s forgiveness is freely given and complete, with no strings attached. Here are specific ways Pope Francis has established for the faithful to receive God’s in- dulgence during this Year of Mercy, December 8, 2015, to November 20, 2016:

For those who are able:

Make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door.

Celebrate the sacraments of the Eucharist or Reconciliation.

Within those two sacraments, make a profession of faith and pray for the Holy Father and for his intentions for the good of the Church and of the entire world.

For those who are sick and una- ble to visit the Holy Door:

Live your illness as a way to be close to Jesus who also suffered in his earthly life.

Receive Communion, or partici- pate in the Eucharist or commu- nity prayer, even by televised media. For those in prison:

 Pray in the chapel of your pris- on, and let God, through your prayer, transform the bars of your cell into a kind of Holy Door,

“because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom” (Pope Francis).

Whenever you respond to God’s gratuitous gift of mercy by doing one of these acts, you will receive the Jubilee Indulgence for your- self or for your deceased loved ones. Receiving this indulgence also commits you to live by mercy so that the fruit of God’s gift to you may flourish.
