Last week Jesus chastised his disciples for arguing about who among them was the greatest. Jesus taught them that the greatest among them will be those who serve the least ones. Today, the disciple John ques- tions Jesus about an unknown exorcist who was driving out demons in Jesus’ name. John’s question might have been motivated by jealousy. Previously in Mark's Gospel, Jesus healed a boy whom the disciples had been unable to heal. John’s question is further evidence that the disciples have not yet grasped Jesus’ words to them. They continue comparing themselves to others who seem to have greater healing powers and do not want to share the power of Jesus’ name with others.
Today, the demon possession described in the Gospels might be seen as a form of mental illness, but the need for healing these syndromes was as real then as it is now. Ex- orcism was a common practice in first-century Palestine.
Some people had the power to heal the symptoms of pos- session. One of the strategies used was to invoke the name of a person or figure who was believed to have the power to heal.
The disciples observed that the unknown exorcist invoked Jesus’ name and was successful in his healing efforts. This unknown healer recognized the power of Jesus’ name, yet he was not a follower of Jesus. In his reply to his disciples, Jesus acknowledges that deeds of faith can precede the words of faith. He also teaches that the disciples should not be reluctant to share Jesus’ healing powers with others.
Later in this Gospel, Jesus teaches us not to create obsta- cles for those who are just beginning to have faith but to encourage even the smallest signs of faith. The Greek word used here for sin also connotes “stumbling” or “causing scandal.” In vivid terms Jesus teaches his disciples the con- sequences to those who would put obstacles before people who are on the road to faith.

aint of the Week Jerome of Dalmatia 345-420Most of the saints are remembered for some out- standing virtue or devotion which they practiced, but Je- rome is frequently remembered for his bad temper! It is true however, that his love for God and his son Jesus Christ was extraordinarily intense; anyone who taught error was an enemy of God and truth, and Saint Jerome went after him or her with his mighty and sometimes sarcastic pen.
Jerome was a Scripture scholar, translating most of the Old Testament from the Hebrew. He wrote commentaries that are a great source of scriptural inspiration for us today.
Saint Jerome is particularly important for having made a translation of the Bible which came to be called the Vulgate. The Council of Trent called for a new and corrected edition of the Vulgate, and de- clared it the authentic text to be used in the Church.
Jerome was well prepared. He began his studies at his birthplace, Stridon in Dal- matia. After his preliminary education, he went to Rome, the center of learning at that time, and to Trier, Germany.
After these preparatory studies, he trav- eled extensively in Palestine, marking each spot of Christ’s life with an out- pouring of devotion. Mystic that he was, he spent five years in the desert of Chal-
cis so that he might give himself up to prayer, penance, and study. Finally, he settled in Bethlehem, where he lived in the cave believed to have been the birthplace of Christ. Je- rome died in Bethlehem, and the remains of his body now lie buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.

La mayoría de los santos son recordados por una virtud destacada o devoción que practicaban pero Jerónimo es frecuentemente recordado por su mal genio. Sin embar- go, es cierto que su amor por Dios y su hijo Cristo Jesús fue extraordinariamente intenso; cualquier que propagaba en contra de Dios era enemigo de Dios y de la verdad, y San Jerónimo se le ponía en contra de él o ella con su po- derosa y en veces sarcástica escritura. Jerónimo era un teó- logo de la Escritura, traduciendo la mayoría del Antiguo Testamento del Hebreo. Escribió los comentarios que sir- ven como una gran fuente de inspiración escritural para nosotros hoy en día. San Jerónimo es importante en espe-
cial por haber realizado la traducción al latín de la Biblia llamada la Vulgata.
