Reflection
Jesus tells us that we are to love others as we love ourselves. Do you love yourself?
Can you see the good that God has put within you?
Do you find it easier to love others or yourself?

“When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them,
a scholar of the law tested him by asking,
‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’
He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.’”

S
aint of the WeekSaint Narcisus of Jerusalem d.c. 216
Life in second- and third-century Jerusalem couldn’t have been easy, but Saint Narcissus managed to live well be- yond 100. Some even speculate he lived to 160.
Details of his life are sketchy, but there are many reports of his miracles. The miracle for which Narcissus is most re- membered was turning water into oil for use in the church lamps on Holy Saturday when the deacons had forgotten to provide any.
We do know that Narcissus became bishop of Jerusalem in the late second century. He was known for his holiness, but there are hints that many people found him harsh and rigid in his efforts to impose Church discipline. One of his detractors accused Narcissus of a serious crime at one point. Though the charges against him did not hold up, he used the occasion to retire from his role as bishop and live in solitude. His disappearance was so sudden and convincing that many people assumed he had actually died.
Several successors were appointed during his years in isolation. Finally,
Narcissus reappeared in Jerusalem and was persuaded to resume his duties. By then he had reached an advanced age, so a younger bishop was brought in to assist him until his death.
Reflection
As our life spans increase and we deal with the physical problems of aging, we might keep Saint Narcissus in mind and ask him to help us meet the challenge of our develop- ing issues.
S
CASA ABIERTA
This week’s Gospel follows close behind the Gospel read last Sun- day. It is the last of three ques- tions put to Jesus by Jewish reli- gious leaders who are trying to trick him into saying something that might get him arrested. This reminds us that the context for today’s reading is the mounting tension between Jesus and the reli- gious leaders in Jerusalem.
The Herodians and the Pharisees asked the first question, which was about taxes. The Sadducees asked the second question, which was about the Resurrection (see Matthew 22:22-33). The third question, considered in today’s Gospel, is asked by a Pharisee who asks Jesus about the greatest of the commandments.
The question requires Jesus to interpret the Law of Moses. The Mosaic Law consists of the Ten Commandments and many additional rules, num- bering over six hundred. Adherence to the Mosaic Law, for a devout Jew, is an expression of faith- fulness to God’s covenant with Israel. The rank- ing of the Commandments was regularly debated among the teachers of the Law.
Jesus answers the Pharisees’ question with a two- fold summary. Jesus says that all of the com- mandments can be summarized in two command- ments: love God and love your neighbor. Both of these were central elements of the religious tradi- tion Jesus learned from his Jewish community.
Indeed these continue to be central aspects of con- temporary Jewish religious understanding. Jesus’
response to his questioners proposed an integral connection between these two aspects of the Jew- ish Law. Love of God finds its expression in our love for our neighbor.
