Jesus was moved with pity for the people who were gathered. Who are the people you are moved with pity for? What can you do to help them?

Why is rest important, and how do you make sure you get enough of it in your own life?

On July 11, 2018, it was announced by Most Reverend Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio, that Pope Francis had appointed Bishop Oscar Cantú as the Coadjutor Bishop of San Jose. He will become the third Bishop of San Jose upon the retirement of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath.

Most Reverend Oscar Cantú, S.T.D was born December 5, 1966, in Houston, TX, the son of Ramiro and Maria de Jesus Cantú, natives of small towns near Monterrey in Mexico. He is the fifth of eight children, five boys, and three girls. Bishop Cantú attended Holy Name Catho- lic School and St. Thomas High School in Hou- ston, and he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dallas, TX. He received

his Masters in Divinity and Masters in Theological Studies from the University of St. Thomas also in Houston. He attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome Italy where he earned his S.T.L. Licentiate in Sacred Theology, as well as his S.T.D., Doctorate in Sacred Theology in Dogmatic Theology. Bishop Cantú was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Houston in 1994. He spent his priestly career working in parishes throughout the Houston metro- politan area. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Christopher Parish. He also taught at the University of St. Thomas and at St. Mary’s Seminary. He also served as pastor at Holy Name Parish.Bishop Cantú also participated in number of ministries and movements in Houston. He was involved in the Christian Family movement; conduct- ed retreats with the youth of the CFM movement in the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese; and worked with the En- gaged Encounter ministry. Bishop Cantú was also in- volved in The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) that ad- dresses social issues in the community. Bishop Cantú was ordained a bishop in 2008 and was appointed Titular Bish- op of Dardano and Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio. In 2013, Bishop Cantú was appointed as second bishop of the Diocese of Las Cruces, NM. He was installed as bishop on February 28, 2013, by Metropolitan Archbishop, Most Reverend Michael J. Sheehan, Archbishop of Santa Fe.

We warmly welcome Bishop Cantú and we look forward to working with him to build up the coming Kingdom of God in this small portion of the vineyard of the Lord.

Será el tercer Obispo de San José al jubilarse el Obispo Patrick J. McGrath. El Muy Reverendo Oscar Cantúa, S.T.D. nació el 5 de diciembre, 1966, en Houston, Texas, hijo de Ramiro y María de Jesús Cantú, de pueblos cerca de Monterrey en México. Es el quinto de ocho hijos – cinco niños y tres niñas. El Obispo Cantú asistió a la Escuela Santísi- mo Nombre y la Secondaria S. Tomás en Houston. It was with great joy that I received news that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Oscar Cantú, currently Bishop of Las Cruces in New Mexico, as Coadjutor Bishop of San Jose.

I congratulate Bishop Cantú on his appointment and thank him for his willingness to come west. I look forward to collaborating with him in our ministry of service to the people of this local Church.

As we prepare to welcome Bishop Cantú to San Jose, I ask the people of this Diocese and all of our brothers and sisters in the Roman Catholic Church to join us in praying for Bishop Cantú.

I know that the new bishop will be eager to come to know the people of the parishes, schools and other institutions of the Diocese, and that he will be as impressed with the work of the clergy, religious and laity as I am.

We will celebrate the Mass of Welcome for Bishop Cantú at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph on September 28, 2018.

En el Evangelio de hoy, lee- mos el reporte del regreso de los Doce que fueron enviados por Jesús a predi- car el arrepentimiento, curar a los en- fermos y expulsar los demonios. Cuan- do los Doce regresan con Jesús, el los invita a alejarse de la muchedumbre y descansar. Pero no los dejan en paz. Al haber los Doce compartido en el ministerio de Jesús, parece ahora que compartirán en su popularidad. La muchedumbre se sigue acercando y ni tiempo hay de comer. Jesús y sus discípulos se suben a una barca con esperanza de en- contrar un lugar desolado. Pero se da cuenta la gente y ganan por adelantados. Jesús y sus discípulos no hayan por donde encontrarse a solas. El Evangelio de Marcos nos dice que Jesús es conmovido y empieza a enseñar a la muchedumbre. Nuestro Evangelio de hoy aquí ter- mina pero el reporte de Marcos de las inquietudes de la muchedumbre continúa en los versos siguientes. Si seguimos leyendo, escucharíamos a Jesús instruir a sus discípulos a dar de comer a la muchedumbre en el fa- moso milagro de la multiplicación del pan y del pesca- do. Loyola Press In this today’s Gospel, we read the report of the return of the Twelve, who were sent by Jesus to preach repentance, heal the sick, and drive out demons. When the Twelve return to Jesus, he invites them to come away from the crowds and rest. But the crowds will not give them peace. As the Twelve have shared in Jesus’ ministry, they now appear to share in his popularity. The crowds continue to approach them, and Mark reports that the disciples don’t even have time to eat. Jesus and his disciples board a boat in hopes of finding a deserted place. But the crowds notice and arrive ahead of them. Jesus and his disciples cannot find a place to be alone. Mark’s Gospel tells us that Jesus is moved with pity and begins to teach the crowds.

Our Gospel for today stops here, but Mark’s report of the unyielding demands of the crowd continues in the verses that follow. If we were to continue reading, we would hear Jesus instruct his disciples to feed the crowd in the familiar

miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. We will hear this story in the next few weeks. The work of Je- sus and his disciples appears to be a round-the-clock job. In today’s Gospel, we hear the Twelve referred to as

“apostles.” The word apostle is a Greek word meaning

“one who is sent.” Jesus chose twelve men from among his disciples whom he sent to share in his ministry of preach- ing and healing. The first report of this is found in the third chapter of Mark’s Gospel, where the Twelve are also called apostles and the names of this select group are listed.

We who are Jesus’ disciples today have also been sent to share the Gospel with others. Perhaps our commitment to following Jesus as his disciple leaves us feeling tired and overwhelmed. In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus affirm the importance of times of rest and renewal. Jesus wanted his disciples to come away and spend time alone with him.

This is what we seek and find in our life of prayer and in our celebration of the Eucharist. Loyola Press

Except for the mother of Jesus, few women are more hon- ored in the Bible than Mary Magdalene. Yet she could well be the patron of the slandered, since there has been a per- sistent legend in the Church that she is the unnamed sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.

Most Scripture scholars today point out that there is no scriptural basis for confusing the two women. Mary Mag- dalene, that is, “of Magdala,” was the one from whom Christ cast out “seven demons” (Luke 8:2)—an indication at the worst, of extreme demonic possession or possibly, severe illness. Writing in the New Catholic Commentary, Father Wilfrid J. Harrington, O.P., says that “seven de- mons” “does not mean that Mary had lived an immoral life—a conclusion reached only by means of a mistaken identification with the anonymous woman of Luke 7:36.”

In the Jerome Biblical Commentary, Father Edward Mally, SJ, agrees that she “is not…the same as the sinner of Luke 7:37, despite the later Western romantic tradition about her.” Mary Magdalene was one of the many “who were assisting them [Jesus and the

Twelve] out of their means.” She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus with his mother. And, of all the “official” witnesses who might have been chosen for the first awareness of the Resurrection, she was the one to whom that privilege was given. She is known as the

“Apostle to the Apostles.”

Reflection

Mary Magdalene has been a victim of mistaken identity for almost 20 centuries. Yet she would no doubt insist that it makes no difference. We are all sinners in need of the sav- ing power of God, whether our sins have been lurid or not.

More importantly, we are all “unofficial” witnesses of the Resurrection.

María Magadalena ha sido víctima de identidad errónea por casi 20 siglos. Sin embargo, ella insistiría que no le importa. Todos somos pecadores necesitados del poder salvífico de Dios, sea o no si nuestros pecados hayan sido provocativos o no. Más importante es que todos somos

“testigos no oficiales de la Resurrección.
