Reflection

Jesus' words of greeting were "Peace be with you," followed by the invitation to forgive sins. How does forgiveness bring peace to you? How

does it change the world?

Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

Jesus again said, ‘Peace be with you.As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,

‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples said to him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’

But he said to them,‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and my hand into his side, I will not believe.’

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them.

Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands, bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.’

Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’

Jesus said to him, ‘Have you come to believe because you have seen me?

A collaboration in which every parish contributes to- ward the support of ministries and services rendered by our Diocese of San Jose. The Cathedral goal this year is $135,500. Each household taking part in the cam- paign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward helping our Diocese fund education, training and ser- vice to the faithful in all the Diocese. This includes Vocations (studies & housing), Ministerial training, Ministry in the jails, Social Ministries, Chancery opera- tional expenses, Youth programs and the Office for the protection of the Vulnerable. Contributions that surpass the parish goal of $135,500 are rebated to our parish directly. You can make it happen!

Some saints’ names are far more familiar to us than oth- ers, but even the lives of obscure holy persons teach us something.

And so it is with Saint Casilda. Her father was a Muslim leader in Toledo, Spain, in the 10th century. Casilda was a devout Muslim but was kind to Christian prisoners. She would carry bread hidden in her clothes

to feed them. Once she was stopped by Muslim soldiers and asked to reveal what she was carrying in her skirt.

When she began to show them, the bread turned into a bouquet of roses.

She became ill as a young woman but did not trust that any of the local Arab doctors could cure her. So she made a pilgrimage to the shrine of San Vicenzo in northern Spain. Like so many other people who made their way there—

many of them suffering from hemor- rhages—Casilda sought the healing wa- ters of the shrine. We’re uncertain what brought her to the shrine, but we do know that she left it relieved of illness.

In response, she became a Christian and lived a life of solitude and penance not far from the miraculous spring. It’s said

that she lived to be 100 years old. Her death likely oc- curred around the year 1050.

Reflection

Tensions between Muslims and Christians have existed throughout history, sometimes resulting in bloody con- flict. Through her quiet, simple life Casilda served her Creator—first in one faith, then in another.

Algunos nombres de santos son más familiarizados que otros pero aún los nombres de las personas sagradas no tan conocidas tienen algo para enseñarnos.

Así lo es con la Santa Casilda. Su padre era un líder Mu- sulmán en Toledo en España en el Siglo 10. Casilda era una musulmana devota pero bondadosa con los presos

Cristianos. Ella les llevaba pan escondido en- tre su ropa para darles de comer. Una vez fue detenida por unos soldados Musulmanes y exigida mostrar lo que llevaba envuelta en su falda. Cuando comenzó a abrir la falda, el pan se volvió en un ramo de rosas. De joven se había enfermado pero no confiaba en los doc- tores locales Árabes para curarla. Entonces realizó un peregrinaje al santuario de San Vi- cenzo en el norte de España. Como muchos otros que caminaban por la misma vía – mu- chos que sufrían hemorragias – Casilda buscó las aguas sanadoras del santuario. No se sabe por seguro lo que la impulsó ir al santuario, sólo que cuando se fue, había quedado curada de su enfermedad.

Por lo tanto, se volvió en Cristiana y vivió una vida de soledad y penitencia cerca del manan- tial milagroso. Dicen que vivió hasta tener 100 años. Su muerte ocurrió probablemente alrede- dor del año 1050.

Reflexión

Las tensiones entre los Musulmanes y los Cristianos han existido en la historia, en veces resultando en conflictos sangrientos. Mediante su vida tranquila y sencilla, Casil- da sirvió a su Creador – primero en una fe y luego en otra.

This Gospel combines two scenes: Je- sus’ appearance to his disciples after his Resurrection and Jesus’ dialogue with Thomas, the disciple who doubt- ed. Part of the mystery of Jesus’ Res- urrection is that he appeared to his dis- ciples not as a spirit, but in bodily form. We do not know, however, exactly what this form looked like. Earlier in John’s Gospel, when Mary of Magdala first encountered the risen Jesus, she did not recognize him until he spoke to her. In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples walking along the road to Em- maus did not recognize Jesus until he broke bread with them. We know from readings such as today’s that in his resurrected form, Jesus was not bound by matter;

he appeared to the disciples inside a home even though the door was locked. Yet the disciples could still touch the marks of his Crucifixion. In today’s Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun; as Jesus was sent by God, so Jesus sends his disciples. He gives his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit so that they will be able to accomplish this task.

Jesus’ words to his disciples also highlight the integral connection between the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share forgiveness and reconciliation with oth- ers.

Thomas, the doubting disciple in today’s reading, rep- resents the reality of the Church that comes after this first community of witnesses to Jesus. All but the first disciples of Jesus must believe without seeing. Like Thomas, we may doubt the news that Jesus, who was crucified and buried, appeared to his disciples. Our human nature seeks hard evidence that the Jesus who appeared to his disciples after his death is indeed the same Jesus who was crucified. Thomas is given the opportunity to be our representative in obtaining this evidence. He gives witness to us that the Jesus who was raised is the same Jesus who died. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are among those who are blessed, for we have not seen and yet believe
